Dear Honorable Jose Serrano:

RE: CHILDHOOD HUNGER AND OBESITY: MAJOR HEALTH PROBLEMS IN THE BRONX As your constituent in the Bronx, I would like to acknowledge the work you have done in the Bronx and New York, especially health related programs you have supported. I am a graduate student in nursing at Herbert Lehman College/ CUNY in the Bronx and currently enrolled in a health policy and development course. I am writing this letter to solicit your support in the current legislation that will fight childhood hunger and make school meals healthier. US President Obama signed into law the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, which will give thousands of US children access to school meals and allow the Department of Agriculture to set nutrition standards for food sold in schools. As you know congressman, hunger and obesity are part of an epidemic affecting all of the Bronx, New York City, and the nation and medical cost for obese children amount to 14.3 billion dollars annually. According to the Bronx District Public Office, 31% of children in South Bronx are obese. The Bronx also faces huge problems. According to the Food Research and Action Center, nearly 37 % of residents in the Bronx lacked money to buy food in the past 12 months. Both rates are alarmingly increasing. Studies have showed a subtle and complicated link between hunger and obesity, which can be addressed partly by making healthful food more affordable. We can tackle the problem by providing income supports, increasing health options and encouraging nutritious behavior. To that end, the City could encourage small farmers to bring their produce to low-income areas and in return the city will offer tax credits and other incentives.
