Lets eat out
It's amazing how our social lives revolve around food. Picnics, pot luck dinners, or eating out on special occasions. Most people take these social occasions for granted. But as a child, our family didn't have a lot. We were always on a budget, but my parents had a few creative ways to allow us to do what other families did.

One thing that we enjoyed was eating out - at a restaurant, of course. But, we rarely got to eat at one. It was for a special treat only ~ like high school graduation. One Saturday afternoon, I felt like having a special treat. There was no reason other than it was a nice day out, and I wanted to enjoy it. So, I asked my mother, "Can we eat out for lunch?" The response, "Absolutely." My mother didn't elaborate with details. She simply packed a picnic lunch that included fried chicken, potato salad, and homemade cookies. Of course, I don't really remember seeing her pack the picnic, or take it with us.

About a half hour after we left, we arrived at one of our favorite parks near North Avenue Beach. Wait a minute, I thought. This isn't a restaurant, it's our favorite place to visit! The excitement of being at our favorite park overshadowed the fact that we weren't eating at a restaurant. However, we were eating out - just outside at our favorite park.

I carry this tradition out to this day. I don't have any children, but I still have to watch my budget. When we need to get out the house and enjoy the weather, I plan a picnic. I make deli sandwiches, and potato salad, at home. Naturally, we need a fun beverage (adults only). We go to the Riverview Park just a couple of miles from our house. The weather is perfect, I'm in good company, and the view is spectacular.

Another thing that we looked forward to during the summer was the picnic at our place of worship. It had the same excitement as our family picnics. More importantly, we would get to have foods that we

Childhood memories of dinnertime hold a special place in my heart. What used to be a daily experience of family unity and sharing is unfortunately now reserved for holidays and an occasional Sunday or birthday gathering. Rather than each family member drifting into his or her own individual world as their life grew busier, we always had the interaction during mealtime to strengthen our family bonds and enrich the daily experience of community life. My mother would create a meal consisting of either a pasta, or meat and potato type meal for our family of six. Our evening meal always included a salad, plenty of vegetables, and a basic dessert like brownies, pie, or ice cream. There was never an official dinner time since my dad’s schedule varied. Therefore,…

I didn’t really do much over the summer. We went to Indiana beach, and I am not too fond of roller coasters, or any ride for that matter, except for at water parks. Last year in 7th grade we went to Washington D.C and saw the washington monument, lincoln memorial, we went inside the Capitol building, The Changing of the Guard at Arlington cemetery, saw The White House. That didn’t really interest me, I don’t even have any souvenirs! Even earlier in the year, we went to Buffalo, New York. We saw a football game (the team we were rooting for lost,(TO THE JETS!) and we got to see Niagara Falls.…

Summers in a revival tent are not what dreams are made but they are most of my childhood memories. I say summer but really it was spring, fall, and sometimes the first part of winter too. My siblings and I had a part in most every detail of the revival. We would help set the tent, set out the chairs, and get the sound system ready. My brother and I also sang. After the service we would take everything inside down and prepare for the next night. When that revival would end we would head to the next town. My summers were rarely sports and relaxation, but they were always faith and…

Ashley, Aykay and I discuss about food we might order when we get to “Lee”. It is an Asian restaurant, so maybe I can get some Asian food I want on my birthday, which might make me feel less homesick somehow. Still, I miss the flavor of my favorite noodle soup that my mom usually makes it in the weekend for our family. Our family ate noodles last year for my birthday. I love the food my mom makes. My mom’s foods have a distinct flavor, which for me, no famous restaurants’ food can be compared with. It is the flavor of love, care and memories.…

When thinking of summer, one is taken back to childhood memories of freedom, play and fun. These memories are nostalgic and whimsical, but for children of low-income households summer vacation is a luxury most cannot afford. Because summer vacation was instated during a time when women did not work, it was easy for children to be watched after for several…

In the summer before 9th grade, things were not going great for my family and me, things in school had been very bad, and things at home and out of school were even worse. At the end of July my mother and I, were looking to go on a trip, to get our minds off of everything that had happened in the past year. We threw ideas around, like going to Vermont, Maine, Pennsylvania, and other nearby states to go sightseeing in. We had almost decided on going to Hershey, Pennsylvania, to go to the amusement park, and see other attractions for a few days, but while looking I saw an advertisement for Universal in Florida. I started looking at plane tickets, hotels, and rental cars. We found an awesome deal, and we booked it. I went to go talk to my friend Chris, on Facebook to tell him I was going, as a joke he said, “Take me too!” I told my mom what he said, she laughed and said “Why not?” I told him to convince his parents because we were leaving in 2 days. It took him a full day, but Wednesday night Chris and his mom showed up to my house with his bags packed ready to go to Florida.…

I do not exactly remember the year, however, I do remember the moment when I realized that food will be one of the most important things for me – the food that is well prepared, rich in flavors, stylish looking and perfectly served. I was known as a little glutton when we were invited to a dinner with family friends. Entering their house, the first thing that grabbed me was the scent - divine, delicious, confusing, glamorous. Shortly after that the discovery was served at the table - skillfully prepared variety of food in perfectly lined dishes with nice cutlery / as far as I understood then /. It was like a real New Year’ Eve for me, an incredible holiday! I jotted down on food as a gluttonous little bear on a barrel of honey and so quietly fell asleep next to my parents overfed and full of satisfaction.…

My earliest memory of my childhood joy was when I was four years old. I was sitting on the kitchen counter next to my mom helping her fix dinner. I do not remember what we cooked but I do remember having fun with my mom, it was the first time she taught me how to prepare food. I remember my mom cutting an onion and the juice squirted into my eye; it hurt so bad I screamed and yelled. To this day I still do not like to use onions when I am cooking, for this reason I have someone else cut the onions for me. I have always loved cooking with my mom and still love how we joke around when we are in the kitchen. I loved that I could tell her anything that is going on with me in my life when we are alone in the kitchen cooking together.…
