Reece and Walker (2006:101) state that “the choice of teaching strategy is often related to your own individual style and what makes you feel most comfortable in doing. However, there are some overall rules that you may like to consider. The first is the type of objective that you want your students to achieve. Four approaches to differentiate instructions can occur by varying contents, processes, products, and manipulating environments. These steps would include students’ preferred modes and therefore, create effective learning environment and help students promote improved achievements. Instructors have to adopt strategies to see what contents their students need to know or already know such as providing pretests or observing their knowledge skills of the topic. If the students demonstrate understanding of the subject can proceed with tasks independently without listening or reading about the topic. The students who do not know the topic would work with students with better knowledge and pick up faster. Instructors need to know what type of students to be taught and modify contents in order to maximize their learning experiences. Students would need to participate in activities preferable to their learning styles to explore and process concepts effectively. Providing alternative methods to modify “ideas embedded within the concept” (Theroux, 2004, para. 11) such as graphic organizers, maps, or charts.…

This article was written by Josheph L. McCaleb from the University of Maryland, College Park. The author states ways to incorporated indirect teaching within the classroom. He states that most beginning teacher start out using direct teaching methods because most feel more comfortable teaching this method. He also states that even veteran teachers that may use indirect teaching are doing so ineffectively. The author states how important indirect teaching is in giving students more questioning and less lecturing and including positive reinforcement for student’s responses rather than critical or negative comments. It is important for teachers to develop a range of instructional methods that include direct and indirect instruction. Indirect instruction carries the primary characteristic of a reduction of control. Most teachers do not like to have reduced control within their classroom. McCaleb then talks about the prerequisites for indirect teaching and how to develop these skills.
