Les Miserables
Name of Film: Les Miserables
Director: Tom Hooper
Genre: Epic Novel

I . Introduction
Les Miserables is a French Novel by Victor Hugo. In the English world, Les Miserables can be translated from the French as The Miserables, The Wretched, The Miserable Ones, The Poor Ones, The Wretched Poor, or The Victims.
Les Miserables was one of Victor Hugo’s greatest works.

Some of Victor Hugo’s sources came from what happened in his life. Jean Valjean’s character is based on the life of Eugene Francois Vidocq, an ex-convict who became a successful businessman. Vidocq helped Hugo with his research for Claude Gueux and Le Dernier jour d’un condamne (The Last Day of a Condemned Man). In 1828, Vidocq, already pardoned, saved one of the workers in his paper factory by lifting a heavy cart on his shoulders as Jean Valjean does. In 1841, Hugo saved a prostitute from arrest for assault. He used a short part of his dialogue with the police when recounting Valjean’s rescue of Fantine in the novel.

Characters:
Jean Valjean- The ex-convict who had been imprisoned for stealing a loaf of bread. Primary protagonist, played by Hugh Jackman.
Javert-a police who’s lifelong ambition is to put Jean Valjean back behind bars. Javert was played by Russel Crowe.
Fantine- Cosette’s mother. She took care of Cosette after a relationship with a college student who leaves her without marrying and providing anything for their child. She was forced to leave Cosette to the Thenardiers while she works for Cosette’s support. Fantine was played by Anne Hathaway.
Cosette- The child of Fantine whom Jean Valjean raises as his granddaughter. Cosette was played by Amanda Seyfried.
Thernardier and Madame Thernardier- Husband and wife to whom Fantine left Cosette to be taken care of but instead they treated Cosette as a slave. Played by Sacha Cohen and Helena Carter.
Marius- A college student and idealist who falls in love with Cossette. Played by Eddie

He invented a new way to make many things, and started a factory that employed many poor people. He was rejected in the city of D_______ by the mayor and the innkeeper. Les Misérables, published in 1862, is a story that focuses on an ex-convict, Jean Valjean, on his road to redemption. Through his course, he encounters characters such as the relentless and unforgiving police inspector Javert, the saintly Monseigneur Myriel – Bishop of Digne, the naïve orphan turned unmarried mother turned prostitute Fantine, the illegitimate child Cosette, the greedy con artist couple M. and Mme. Thenardier, and the upper class boy estranged from his family Marius. With these people, he learns compassion, forgiveness, mercy, and love. What’s outstanding about this story is how Victor Hugo incorporated his beliefs without making the story flat. He was able to articulate the struggles of class oppression and social injustice in such a way that not only the upper classes would understand, but also the lower ones who are the main reason he wrote the novel for.…

Functioning at the highest stage of Kohlberg's Theory of Moral Reasoning, Jean Valjean is guided by personal ethical principles. Even Valjean's initial crime of stealing a loaf of bread can be justified if a more important principle, such as the prevention of suffering, is upheld. This correlates with a fundamental concept of Stage 6, Universal Ethical Principle, which dictates that law should be discarded when it fails to represent justice. This concept repeats itself when Valjean shelters Fantine, a woman forced into illegal prostitution by a society that is incapable of maintaining her welfare. As with social justice, "…if the soul is left in darkness, sins will be committed. The guilty one is not he who commits the sin, but the one who causes the darkness." [1] Thus, Valjean was able to view Fantine not as a criminal, but as a victim. Jean Valjean is also capable of exemplifying a second concept of Stage 6, which requires him to be concerned about equality as opposed to personal gain. When a man is arrested under his name and is about to be committed for his crimes, Valjean declares his identity to the court, thus exonerating the…

In Les Miserables, Victor Hugo portrays human nature in a neutral state. Humans are born with neither good nor bad instincts, but rather society affects our actions and thoughts. Hugo portrays the neutral state of mind through Jean Valjean and Cosette. The two extremes of good and evil are represented through Thénardier and the bishop. Good and evil coexists in the society and affects Valjean and Cosette. It is the two extremes of good and evil that dictate the lives of Valjean and Cosette. The bishop represents charity and love. Everything he's ever had, he gave to charity. When the bishop first met Valjean, he said, "You need not tell me who you are. This is not my house; it is the house of Christ. It does not ask any comer whether he has a name, but whether he has an affliction. You are suffering; you are hungry and thirsty; be welcome. And do not thank me; do not tell me that I take you into my house..... whatever is here is yours." (pg. 15-16) The bishop didn't look at him as a convict; he looked at him as a fellow brother. Later, when the bishop found out that Valjean stole his silver, he wasn't mad, but offered all of his silver to Valjean saying, "Don't forget that you promised me to use this silver to become an honest man." Thénardier, on the other hand, is the exact opposite of the bishop. He represents the corruptive nature of society. He's the one that changes people for the bad. An example of how Thénardier represents greed and evil is how he mistreated Cosette when he was taking care of her. He made her wash and clean, while letting his kids run around and play. Thénardier took advantage of Cosette's mother, Fantine. He kept on asking her for more money, when in fact he didn't really need it. When it was cold, Thénardier told…

“So long as the three problems of the age- the degradation of man by poverty, the ruin of women by starvation, and the dwarfing of childhood by physical and spiritual night- are not solved… books like this cannot be useless,” (Hugo Preface). In his novel, Les Miserables, Victor Hugo illustrates these problems throughout the plot, adding to the public obsession over the book. Most went crazy over the light he shone on the struggles of France in the late 1800s, instead of the happy love stories many authors were writing about at that time. Through Les Miserables, Hugo ties the degradation of man by poverty, the ruin of women by starvation, or the dwarfing of childhood into almost all of the characters introduced.…

Stephen Frears. The two leading actors in the film are Glenn Close as the Marquise de Merteuil and John Malkovich as the Vicomte de Valmont. The reason that this movie is one of my favorites is because it depicts the competition, or war, between the sexes. Although the setting of the movie is in the 18th century, the intent of the plot can be as current today. It does use the restrictive life of women in that time period, but it also shows how women could work their way around those restrictions. Essentially the conclusion of the movie proves a common theory that what goes around, comes around or evil begets evil.…
