Do teenagers today make the smartest decisions? Or do teenagers today have the opportunity to make many of their own decisions? In comparison to past decades, children in this current society are making many of their decisions primarily on the basis that our society is more guarded and protective. Children very seldom run around the neighborhood freely and have random playmates. Everything is organized and scheduled allowing little freedom for kids to make their own mistakes. This mentality consequently runs over into the parents dictating who their child dates. Once again this lack of decision making prevents teens from learning from their mistakes and taking the responsibility for their own lives. Therefore, teenagers today should be able to choose who they do and do not date without their parent's consent.…

Parents should allow their children to grow up on themselves for them to be able to make difficult decisions, so they realize how it is out in the real world. In both the articles “‘Snowplow Parents’ may be trapping their children” and “Kids of Helicopter Parents Are Sputtering Out” show that students’ parents are way more involved in their lives than they should be. Students should be allowed to have more freedom to be able to have fun, but they should also know that having an education is important to become successful or at least be smart in an area of their interest. As students graduate high school they are only a step away from being left alone by their parents and having freedom. Parents should be there to listen to their child’s needs…

I agree with Kahn, parents do have a certain magnitude of authority over the youth of society, but it will only have a limited effect. Just as the aged people of today eventually gained or were allowed their ability to make their own decisions and others, so must the younger generation be able to do. This opportunity was one never given to Romeo or Juliet they were left in a position of the second type of connection, where their only option was to go against the rules and concepts set before them.…

Of course not every single adolescent is mature enough to make a reasonable decision that may affect their life, and we can argue that not every adult is mature enough or has the capacity to make their own decision. Throughout the years, our founding fathers through much controversy and many hard fought battles has paved and made it possible for us as U.S. citizens to live in prosperity and freedom as a country. We as citizens should give back to them for all the hard work they put forth towards making our country great and that is by being responsible. I find that this is a huge problem in our country today, there is not a lot of respect and effort towards to right things to continue making our country great. It seems like all people want to do is sit around and watch things just get worse and worse, but yet don't do anything to prevent it. The argument “a mature person is self-directing, so parents who make all their children’s for them are doing their offspring a disservice” has allot of validity to it, and in more ways than one is true. A child whose parents or guardians make all of his or her decisions for them, are in a way hindering the child because the child does not have the opportunity to think for himself. When that child grows up and needs to be able to make important decisions such as what college to go to, who to marry, or what kind of job to apply for, that child will more likely than not, not know how to properly decide based on the information or facts provided to him or her. For instance if a child grows up and is faced with what college to go to and that child has never had to make any important decision for himself, that child may end up in a college going after a degree program that is not truly what he or she wants to do with their life based on what his or her parent tell them they should go into. That child has then wasted four to five years of his or her life and has to start all over searching for the proper degree or job where he or she can thrive financially and be happy. There is a minute percent of children who will be able to overcome the mentality of not having to think on his or her own and be able to make the important decisions that need to be made, but at what price? How many times will that child have to make the wrong choice and suffer because they were not allowed to think on their own? The constant failure and rejection could possibly make matters worse for the child, and could lead to relinquishing all hope.…
