Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarroti were both major figures of the fifteenth-century Italian High Renaissance. Leonardo da Vinci was born in 1452 and was twenty two years old when Michelangelo was born in 1475. Both grew up breathing art and became passionate about it. These two famous artists created masterpieces and techniques that influenced and astonished artists, scholars, and other individuals even to this day. Each artist completed different forms of art than one another and had different interests as well as art. They used different techniques and motivation which made their work distinctive. Leonardo was a very detailed artist. He focused on the eye’s actual view and applied that to his art. Leonardo steered away from abstract and old medieval, traditionalist thoughts and used his own perceptions, ideas and techniques. Da Vinci changed many attitudes and the idea of what beauty was during the time when many people had extremely traditional mindsets. Leonardo created two of the most famous paintings in history, the “Mona Lisa” and “The Last Supper”. “The Last Supper” is a tempura and oil fresco depicting the dinner when Jesus Christ addressed the apostles. In that work, he expressed profound body language and other details. The “Mona Lisa”, a painting depicting a woman with a shadowy slight smile, was Leonardo’s most well-known portrait. In this work, Leonardo accomplishes realistic curves, uses fine shading, and creates harmony overall. Michelangelo was also a successful artists with many famous works. During Michelangelo’s life many critics, scholars, and other artists considered him divine and looked up to him and his art for inspiration. Most of Michelangelo’s work established great intensity and realism. In 1497, Michelangelo completed his first true masterpiece. He carved the famous “Pieta” out of marble.
