Legend by Judith Wright
Legend by Judith Wright - 1915-2000,
written in 1949 and published in
anthology 'The Gateway' in 1953.

The blacksmith's boy went out with a rifle and a black dog running behind.
Cobwebs snatched at his feet, rivers hindered him, thorn branches caught at his eyes to make him blind and the sky turned into an unlucky opal, but he didn't mind.
I can break branches, I can swim rivers, I can stare out any spider I meet, said he to his dog and his rifle.

The blacksmith's boy went over the paddocks with his old black hat on his head.
Mountains jumped in his way, rocks rolled down on him, and the old crow cried, You'll soon be dead.
And the rain came down like mattocks.
But he only said,
I can climb mountains, I can dodge rocks, I can shoot an old crow any day, and he went on over the paddocks.

When he came to the end of the day, the sun began falling,
Up came the night ready to swallow him, like the barrel of a gun, like an old black hat, like a black dog hungry to follow him.
Then the pigeon, the magpie and the dove began wailing and the grass lay down to pillow him.
His rifle broke, his hat blew away and his dog was gone and the sun was falling.

But in front of the night, the rainbow stood on the mountain, just as his heart foretold.
He ran like a hare, he climbed like a fox; he caught it in his hands, the colours and the cold - like a bar of ice, like the column of a fountain, like a ring of gold.
The pigeon, the magpie and the dove flew up to stare, and the grass stood up again on the mountain.

The blacksmith's boy hung the rainbow on his shoulder instead of his broken gun.
Lizards ran out to see, snakes made way for him, and the rainbow shone as brightly as the sun.
All the world said, Nobody is braver, nobody is bolder, nobody else has done anything equal to it. He went home as easy as could be with the swinging rainbow on his

In 2010, Laura Hillenbrand released a brilliant tribute to a resilient national hero, Louis “Louie” Zamperini, whose story was not widely known at the time. Fast forward four years and this tribute, Unbroken, has been made into a major motion picture and the remarkable story of the Olympian-turned-soldier has reached the masses. In the book Unbroken, which I read shortly after it was released, Hillenbrand chronicles Zamperini’s epic and, at times, terrifying odyssey. Raised in California, he was the son of Italian immigrants.…

At the Philadelphia Museum of Art, I have selected “The Last Drop.” The painting was painted by Judith Leyster on 1609. It is done in oil on canvas and the size of the painting is almost the same like any others that about a foot wide, length and width. The condition of the painting seems to be in a new condition, as if the painting was never touched at all. The texture of this painting have a smooth and rigid touch to it. The painting is consisted of one man is sitting on a chair binge drinking that looks like an alcoholic beverage, the second man is seen standing wearing a flamboyant dress as he is seen dancing while smoking and holding a cup, as he seems to ignore the first guy. The third one is a skeleton lurking behind the man drinking,…

The movie Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand depicts a clear description of the experiences and struggles that those who fought in it had to endured. Timely, it also shows the effect of WWII on the relationships between different ethnicities and races as people found something in common with those they once considered as outcast of their social network. However it also created the opposite effect in which it divided people and placed them to fight against each other for a cause they themselves did not hold; it teared down relationships and friendships . Unbroken shows the changes of WII on the attitudes we had towards those who surround us, whether it was to our countrymen, immigrants or international individuals. From the start of the movie, Louie…

"Joan of Arc," was painted by the French realist artist Jules Bastien-Lepage in 1879. "After the province of Lorraine was lost to Germany following the Franco-Prussian War in 1821, The Frenchmen saw in Joan of Arc a new and powerful symbol. In 1875, Bastien-Lepage, a native of Lorraine began to make studies for a picture of her. In the present painting, exhibited in the Salon of 1880, Joan is shown receiving her revelation in her parents garden. Behind her are Saints Michael, Margaret, and Catherine. Susan Pfeffer’s story “Ashes” teaches a lesson about how trust is decided on past, not relationships. Ashleigh, “Ashes”, with divorced parents, talks about how when she is with her dad, the sun shines just a little bit brighter, but according to her mother, he is just an “irresponsible bum”. Ashes was a nickname her father gave her, which her mother hates. Ashes, says that her father hardly ever keeps a promise, such as when she was a kid, he told her that the stars were her necklace. One lesson the story suggests is that parent-child relationships can quickly change, depending on the choices they make.…

Society and peers are judgmental with one's skin color, size, looks and even intelligence starting in adolescence. Children are judged by if one is ‘wearing glasses, they must be smart’ or ‘one is tall so they must play volleyball.’ Society should not judge a child based on their looks especially since they have not developed their identity. Judith Ortiz Cofer, author of “The Story of My Body” published in The Latin Deli in 1993, shares her story of dealing with self-image and finding her identity, "My skin color, my size and my appearance were variables - things that were judged according to my current self-image, the aesthetic values of the times, the places I was in, and the people I met". (page 341) The author tries to create a space for discussion than answering questions on identity formation. While I was growing up, I experienced the similar self-image issues regarding height. It was a constant reminder that I was different when I wanted to fit in with my classmates.…
