Legalizing Marijuana

Are you aware that marijuana has been proven to help people with the pain of chronic illnesses, with less side effects then legal prescription drugs? Yet most states still have not legalized marijuana for medicinal purposes. Many people are arrested in the United States for possession or smoking marijuana, yet on a regular basis, we have to let more severe hardened criminals out of jail because of overcrowding. Marijuana should be legalized in the United States.
What is Marijuana? According to the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws “Marijuana is the third most popular recreational drug in America (behind only alcohol and tobacco). (NORML 2008) Marijuana is the most often used illegal drug in the country. Marijuana is an herb produced from the hemp plant. Marijuana has many different street names such as Aunt Mary, Dope, Grass, Weed Skunk, Pot, Reefer and Mary Jane. Marijuana is known as a hallucinogenic: however, in the early 1800’s to the late 1900’s the hemp plant was used for many other things, our ancestors used the plant to make items from clothing, paper and rope to fuel. Hemp produced products were know to be very strong and able to withstand more stress, then products made with other materials, clothing made from the hemp plant, lasted much longer then cotton-fabric products. This may be why the fabric industry voted to stop the cultivation of marijuana back in the late 1800s. In 1937 U.S Congress and Franklin D Roosevelt Voted and outlawed the continued cultivation of the cannabis plant and established the Marijuana Tax Act, this was unfortunate, because the majority of the congress did not know what marijuana was, or that it was produced by the hemp plant. Facts about Marijuana Seed, Legalizing Marijuana).The hemp leaves are dried, then usually smoked, either rolled into a cigarette that is commonly know as a joint or sometimes smoked in a water pipe otherwise known as a bong, the herb can also be mixed in with food and cooked or even brewed like tea. Many people in the United States smoke
Marijuana, over 30 million people or 40% over the age of 12 smoke marijuana on a regular basis. (2002 Substance abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) Most people started smoking marijuana for fun, to unwind or relieve stress; however, marijuana is now also smoked for medical purposes. Marijuana is now commonly used to help people with the pain from chronic illness such as multiple sclerosis, cancer, Aids, glaucoma and stomach ailments. Patients have found that smoking marijuana helps more with the pain then prescriptions drugs, is safe and less expensive then some prescriptions. Marijuana has fewer side effects then most prescription drugs that are normally used for these chronic illnesses. (2007 Marijuana is an Herb, article) In 1986, the Food and drug administration approved of a pill called Mainol, this pill is produced from products that contain THC, which is a component of Marijuana. Marinol is prescribed to cancer patients to help with the nausea caused from chemotherapy. Patients have found that Marinol is still not as effective as smoking Marijuana. Marijuana has also been found to help patients with arthritis, with little or no side effects. Doctors that cannot prescribe marijuana for arthritis will normally prescribe high doses of Aspirin or other NSAID prescription drugs. The united States averages over 1000 deaths a year that are related to Aspirin use, over 7600 annual deaths related to NSAID prescriptions and 70,000 hospitalizations from the...
