Major changes came to the textile industry during the 20th century, with continuing technological innovations in machinery, synthetic fibre, logistics, and globalization of the business. The business model that had dominated the industry for centuries was to change radically. Cotton and wool producers were not the only source for fibres, as chemical companies created new synthetic fibres that had superior qualities for many uses, such as rayon, invented in 1910, and DuPont's nylon, invented in 1935 as in inexpensive silk substitute, and used for products ranging from women's stockings to tooth brushes and military parachutes.…

The process of tanning and finishing transforms leather into a fine product. The tanning process, however, preserves the natural qualities of the hide. The creases, stretch marks, scars and insect bites that the animal acquires while at pasture are unique and form an integral part of the leather. Often faintly visible, these blemishes do not detract from the quality of the product. Instead, they act as a guarantee that the leather is natural with intact, full grain. After several months of use and exposure to variations in temperature, stretching and general wear, the leather takes on its final appearance, adapting to environmental constraints and often maintaining the residual marks of the hide. This natural process (which also occurs in leather used for clothing and accessories) is visible depending on the sofa’s level of use. Environmental…

Al-Karam tanneries is a leading leather manufacturer in South East Asia. They are the sole exporter of leather to about 60% of the South Africa region and exports extensively to China as well. Currently they are one of the best leather manufacturers in Pakistan and are growing every year but they are facing multiple hurdles in the way. One of the major operational problems they face is the prevention of the formula from its workers and competitors, for which they have no proper set up. Another problem is the leather hide split, regarding which the firm is still indecisive as to whether they should sell it or produce further products from it. With thorough analysis, Al-Karam tanneries can set its production process in batch system with no contact of one batch with the other. Hence, no one would know the full formula and won’t be able to replicate it. Whereas the split should be sold in cash or should be outsourced for production because if produced within the facility it will bring cash flow problems and will affect the overall effectiveness of the firm because even with outsourcing they can earn a 20% profit.…
