Learning styles and effective study habits

My top scores from the using multiple intelligence to enhance studying and learning tutorial was musical/rhythm, intrapersonal, and interpersonal.

Describe the major characteristics of your preferred learning style?
The major characteristics of my preferred learning style is listen to music while studying, Take a short break from studying to listen to music, and write a song about the chapter information. I also got intrapersonal as one of my study styles and the characteristics of this style are studying in an area by myself, studying in short burst to retain the information, and working at my own pace. The last study style I got was interpersonal and the characteristics of this style are study in groups, share the information with others, and teach the information to others.

List at least three study strategies and techniques you have or will use during this course to increase your effectiveness?
I know that music/rhythm is one of the strategies that I do have because I turn information into songs so I can remember the information easier and I always work or study with soft music in the background. I also know that I do have the intrapersonal learning style because I like to be by myself to study. It’s easier for me to focus when I am by myself. A strategy I am willing to use to help my effectiveness is interpersonal. Studying with other people in a group can help me be able to understand the information better. Having other people to ask questions to will also help me be able to understand the information better.

I learned that even though I prefer to follow rules when it seems like no one is around my discipline always takes over. The learning curb I have in this class, and being not-so-computer-savy, it brings about many frustrations. I realized I have to confront this head on and make the best of the positives about my competencies to be successful at everything I do. I essentially have to look at it no different from a mission given to me by the US Army.…

In a recent study, I was able to determine which learning style category I fell into. Three learning style categories were discussed. Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic Learning Styles were presented. The first part of the assessment was to go through three different lists consisting of different habits often associated with learning and studying. I was to read through each list and check off all that applied to my personal study and learning habits. When I was done, I found that I am dominantly a Visual Learner. Some of the characteristics I possess in relation to being a Visual learner are 1) I often ask for instructions to be repeated 2) I like to use maps or note cards when I review my notes 3) The best way for me to remember something is to picture it in my head. These are some…

Every course is a different learning style, using a variety of different styles that apply help retain the concept of the material. By using visual images and pictures help retain some difficult task in mathematics. When things do not require a lot of concentration, I use the aural method, allowing music to guide me in the communication process. The Aural method usually happens late night after a difficult day. In the complicated subjects that require the most attentive concentration and energy, using the solitary learning style helps best. The need of silences is necessary in private and noise free room. The three study strategies that I have chosen are Recite, Rehearse, and Write, Study during short, frequent sessions, and using flash cards. Recite, Rehearse and write is a way of learning the material by respectively reviewing it repetitively. Study during short, frequent sessions is a way to gain the knowledge by reviewing the material in short intervals, leaving it for a short period of time and then returning to go over it again. Using Flash cards is a process that uses visual cues to help the intake of information that you are studying.…

Some of our learning style may be inherited. That is we are born with certain traits that affect how we learn. Learning styles are therefore very unique to each individual and as is also the case with myself. As a student in India I was used to studying in a structured environment and values were instilled by my parents, teachers and peers to study with high motivation and persistence. Bright light and formal classroom setting were the environmental factors that I was used to. I think this is mainly because I grew up in a tropical climate. For this reason I have a hard time studying in the winter season. Also I need a quiet environment to learn and do not like to be disturbed when I am learning.…

There are several methods used to determine learning styles. “A learning style is, rather, a description of a process, or of preferences. Any inventory that encourages a learner to think about the way that he or she learns is a useful step towards understanding, and hence improving, learning” (Fleming, N., & Baume, D., 2006, p.4). . One of the most commonly used learning styles is the Fleming VARK model. VARK stands for visual, auditory, reading and writing and kinesthetic learners. This model focuses on the best way for a student to learn and retain new information based on sensory modality. “The only perceptual modes, or senses, it does not address are taste and smell” (Thomas, H. F., Shah, A. J., 2007). When a student knows his/her learning style preferences, he/she is able to learn more effectively and store and recall the information being taught. My learning style was identified as multimodal, consisting of auditory and reading and writing preferences. In the past, I have mainly used reading and writing as the way to learn. According to the VARK analysis I now have to incorporate auditory learning in order to efficiently and effectively learn new information better.…
