Task 1 – Signed off Learning Contract

Learning Contract

Choice of topics and learning context.
This learning contract has been prepared to guide my study of two very useful topics. I have chosen to develop my competencies in ‘Working relations’ and ‘Time management’. Should any of these prove difficult my focus will change to the topic of ‘Influence and Persuasion’. Below I have cited reasons why I have chosen the above topics.
The first reason is due to the tough economic period which is driving management at the department in which I work to get more done with fewer resources. Consequently there is pressure on staff to perform more efficiently and effectively in order to retain their positions for which there is growing competition.
In response to this need coupled and course requirements I have sought advice from senior colleagues and concluded that improvements in the above learning topics are most needed.
Negative working relationships at work are directly impacting on my morale and as a consequence this is affecting the quality of services provided. Due to my weaknesses in these areas I have chosen to learn and implement strategies for improvement in the area of working relations and communication. At work the jobs I am delegated must be completed promptly and if this is not observed effectively other time bound tasks are affected. My increasing workload and responsibility requires new skills and the ability to strengthen my time management skills in order to be able to manage work more effectively.
My work environment has influenced my choice of topics because there is a skills gap which needs to be filled in order for me to progress the career ladder. Without proper time management strategies in place I will not be able to perform to the capacity and calibre required for future positions or if a better job opportunity arises.
My previous personal, professional and academic knowledge will serve as a guide and

My results from this diagnostic survey on time management assured me that my time management skills are low. The survey revealed that I am on the bottom of the scale of time management. There were two sections of the survey. One section measured your time management skills in an office setting and the other section measured your time management skill in your personal life. By having two sections you can compare your time management skills for the two different settings. The total score measures your overall time management skills and it also puts the score in a category. My scores of 27 points for personal life and 31 points for office settings combines to a 58 point total score. My combined score falls in to the lowest category that suggests that training is necessary and will considerably enhance my effectiveness. The first step of solving a problem is identifying it. This report is a self- reflection from learning ‘The Effective Manger’ module. I find it is a very practical module that teaches me a lot of skills to be an effective manager. The famous quote from Confucius says ‘I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand’. (Robbins & Hunsaker. 1996) I think this saying exactly described what I feel after studying this module. From learning there are three topics inspired me want to know better, they are time management, communication and decision making. I will explain the reason why I feel they are relevant to me, and apply the theory to evaluate how I should improve in the future.…
