2.1. Larry Page’s Challenges / Initiatives

i) Telecommunications.

Google has been working in the last years to become big at the telecommunication sector. Taking Apple as an example with their iPhone, Google wants as well its piece of the cake. After several investments on telecommunications and partnerships with HTC and Samsung, but the biggest investment that Google has ever made, were the $12.5 billion were paid to purchase Motorola. The primary goal of the deal seems to be for Google to have many Motorola patents in its hands so as to avoid any legal issues in its future plans (Turttle, 2012). This new action has yet no answer about its effectiveness, but it puts Google in a strong position for new market opportunities and also is provided with a very good new research and development infrastructure.

ii) Social networking.

Google offers many internet services, such Blogger, YouTube, Google Earth, Gmail...But a big part of the internet users spend lots of their time on social networks, on which Facebook has taken the biggest stake. The problem with Facebook is that not only leads a big sector on the internet, but that Facebook keeps information not available for other servers, and that reflects negatively in the Google’s search results. It’s not the first time that Google tries to create a social network (it tried before with Wave and Buzz, with a total failure as a result), but experts indicate that Google’s new social network, Google+, has improved several defects on friendship and privacy management, developed site use easiness and has created a hybrid product between Twitter and Facebook, taking advantage of their strong virtues (Segovia, 2011).
