Leadership Style Assessments
Since it has been my experience that there are exceptions to rules, I believe that leadership style assessments are useful if they are coupled with other data, such as independent assessors. For example, this week I completed a self -assessment regarding my leadership style from our course textbook, Leadership Theory and Practice, which indicated I am strong in both task and relationship skills. While I mostly agree with this outcome after reflecting on my past leadership accomplishments and activities, I wondered if others who know me would agree with the assessment. Then, I also wondered how bias I was in completing the assessments. As a matter of fact, according to Northhouse the purpose of the assessment was to present a general profile of leader skills. (Northhouse, 2016). I believe leadership assessments are very useful in understanding the behaviors of global change agents because it reveals the actions and interactions that global change agents exhibit from an objective standpoint. I concluded that the young men were mostly correct in their complaints that the adult education program was led by teachers and staff who were very unhelpful and hostile to them. The staff basically felt that since their students failed high school, their students must be motivated and prepared to learn and therefore any student in adult education who couldn’t do so wounded up dropping out because the teachers were harsh on them. I on the other hand believe the guys were motivated and prepared to learn, but somehow they couldn’t. Thus I started Guns for Books where the same young men who failed the adult basic education program, were tested for learning disabilities and reading abilities. They were mentored by reading specialists, or special Ed. teachers, and sent back to the adult education center where they all
