Leadership Article Review

What is leadership? Is there a catchall definition to describe what leadership is? For my review, I have chosen an article from Forbes contributor Kevin Kruse titled “What is Leadership?” In this article Mr. Kruse initially diverges from the main topic of answering what is to answer what is not leadership. Afterwards, he examines leadership definitions from some notable business thinkers then gives his definition. Beginning with what he states is not leadership, Kruse outlines what are commonly misconstrued ideas of what leader is. The first concept touched on is that leadership has nothing to do with one’s seniority or even their position in a company. “Leadership doesn’t automatically happen when you reach a certain pay grade (Kruse, 2013). ” Anyone can be a leader and from the assigned readings in this class I’ve learned that leadership can be regarded as a trait, an ability, a behavior, a relationship, or a process (Northouse, 2012, p. 9). That being said, Northouse reinforces that leadership isn’t something concerned with position
Within my assigned observations, I noticed that some regard management and leadership in the same light, failing to see that not all managers are leaders. Rightly so, this article states that leadership is not management, “[…] managers manage things. Leaders lead people (Kruse, 2013). ” Kruse also points out that attributes and leadership have nothing to do with one another. At first glance I considered this to be erroneous because in order to influence others (a key element in leadership as outlined by Northouse and Kruse), one needs certain attributes. Reading further though this article, I gained a clearer understanding of what Kruse meant; the basic definition of leadership need not include attributes. Referring back to the Northouse’s textbook’s definition, there is no mention of traits or attributes, showing an even further correlation between the author of our class textbook and Kruse. To

There are many definitions of leadership. The Collins English dictionary defines leadership as “the leader(s) of a party or group.” Yet true leadership is much more than that. A leader can be the chief executive officer of an organization, or a first year employee who leads his or her team to success behind the scenes. A leader might lead through official authority and power, yet just as often great leaders lead through inspiration, persuasion and personal connections. Teaching others to be a leader is a daunting task within itself (Pankaew, 2013).…

Leadership as a concept or notion lends itself easily to myriad definitions. Manning and Curtis (2012) describes leadership as the social influence that results from the capacity to initiate ideas and deeds that others can follow. A leader often stands in front of others and they follow in his footsteps. According to Hopen (2010), “leadership is the capacity to guide or direct others” (p.4). To Fulwiler (2005), leadership is the ability to make people do what they normally would not do or go to places they normally would not go. Leadership can also be defined as the…

Leadership is the capability to influence a person or a group to achieve many goals (Robbins, 2005). To elaborate, leadership is a complex process by which a person influences others to accomplish a mission, task, or objectives and directs the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent by applying their leadership attributes such as values, ethics, knowledge, skills, and belief (Clark, 2000). Most importantly, not all leaders happen to be managers, and not all managers are leaders (Robbins, 2005). Even though one is positioned as a manager or a supervisor (he has the power to accomplish certain tasks within the organization) it does not necessarily mean he is a leader unless he makes people…
