Leadership and Peer Support
Leadership and Peer Support Final Reflection Guide Mihalitsa Hatzisavvas At the beginning of this year I had no idea which class I wanted to take last. I had not many options, I went from Law to English to Media then I was just going to take a spare. One day as I was walking down to my next class I heard Mr.Karr talking about the Leadership class and how it only had one student in it so far. I then went and took it to the next step and did my research and I got put in leadership. I didn’t have a clue on what I was doing or what it was about, all I knew was that it required me to change and become a leader to the school. Throughout the semester it had its good times and it’s bad. I learned a lot about myself and how to present myself to other people. The first couple days of going into my placement was hard, I never enjoyed it. I’ve always loved sports and being active but I hated the fact that I didn’t know anyone or what my teacher expected me to do. The first day was hard, I was prepared with proper gym clothes but I didn’t know what I was supposed to do, so I just participated with the Grade 10 girls and what they were doing. The next week I felt much better. I knew what I was doing after I spoke to Mrs. Mann and Mrs.Shillium and that was for me to motivate the students, never letting them give up, helping Mrs. Mann with her activities and basically just help around with whatever needs to be done. It got easier as the days went on, I got to meet some amazing girls that I’ve never spoke to while being at Williams and I built on friendships. Now whenever I walk the halls I wave and say a quick hello. They were the best group of girls I have ever worked with in a class or even outside of school, so that’s how it also made it easy for me to get used to being a leader in gym. I was

I dreaded the alarm that woke me up at 6:30 in the morning. It was as loud as a screaming toddler that could be heard for miles. I groggily got out of bed and got ready for my first day of school. It was a weird feeling not putting on a uniform like I had been for the past nine years, but I also enjoyed that freedom. The nervousness became more and more intense as I could closer and closer to campus. When we arrived, I got out of the car, and watched my dad drive off to go take my younger sister to school. There was no going back now; I had no other choice than to walk through those doors. I felt like my throat was in my stomach. I noticed some familiar faces, and I walked towards them. While I was approaching my friends, a senior, facing toward me, walked passed. He must have been at least six feet tall, which was incredibly intimidating for me at just over five feet. I was not used to the fact that I’d potentially have classes with these giants. Additionally, the array of new teachers, and having to learn all of their teaching styles and things they did or did not tolerate was hard in…

When I first arrived at high school, I was extremely nervous. The school was huge and there was not a familiar face in site. Although I was nervous, staff and students did their best to create a positive learning environment. Going into my sophomore year, I received the same positive energy from the staff and my peers. My guidance counselor, Ms. Hunter, helped me to prepare and offered me the opportunity to enroll in…

After finding out I had won the election I knew what really was placed ahead of me now was the ability to become a leader in the community as well as at school. Other people would now look up to me. I would grow and start to transform into the leader I am today by attending Mt. Adams Leadership camp that next summer. There, I found myself reaching out of my comfort zone and developing my leadership skills. Mt. Adams was integral in helping my sophomore year go smoothly. I would continue to go to the campus at Cispus Learning Center for Leadership camp for three years straight. Each year building my skills and digging deeper into my personal belief's about leadership and serving others. My junior year I was ASB Vice President and now going into my senior year I am the ASB President. I have confidence in myself to become a senior leader in my small school and community. As I reflect on my experiences in ASB and leadership, I would never be here at this point without the encouragement of others. My newly developed confidence has bled into my leadership in the classroom, athletic fields and my community. Through my assistant job at the library I have learned to work with a staff to plan events for kids during the summer. I learned that planning is not easy and there are many administrative hoops that you have to jump through in order to plan a successful event. I have been teaching roller skating to kids in the community for about four years now and this experience has taught me to work with people all ages and has given me a chance to develop leadership skills. I have learned to be an empathetic leader, by helping them learn and grow from their mistakes and providing emotional support. Spearheading this class was no walk in the park. This experience put my leadership abilities, patience, and positivity to the test; however, I am proud to say that I have taught over four hundred students how to roller skate proficiently over these past 4 years. Being a roller skating instructor has really shaped my qualities and values I have now. These leadership qualities and skills I have gained from my experience of being a roller skating instructor are transferrable to my ability to be a good RA. I know that this job will help me continue to improve my leadership skills and allow me to learn from my residents, co-workers and supervisors. At last, being a crew leader has given me the chance to be a mentor and a leader, guiding the freshmen to discover what it takes to be…

It was a beautiful summer day at the beginning of my senior year. Students were anxious to meet their teachers and begin the last year of their high school career. There were those excited to graduate that knew exactly what they wanted to do with their life. Then there were those like me who had no idea what college they would be attending the following year. I knew I wanted to go to college, but I had no idea which one I wanted to attend or what my major would be. After I arrived that morning, I walked into the crowded hallway of my 4A public school on my way to my first and hardest class, pre-calculus AP. I was one of the last ones to enter the classroom and had no other choice but to sit next to my ex-best friend. It was already a bad day. Once the bell rang, Mr. Rogers, an older teacher with gray hair and big circular glasses, stood in front of the classroom and began teaching our first lesson. Within five minutes of the lesson, I was already lost. Once he turned around to see if anyone had questions, I was the first one to raise my hand.…

I asked to move to the front of the class and from then on I always stayed focused in class and took notes of important lessons being taught during class time. I had help from all of my teachers on the side and even stayed after class to ask questions about anything I didn’t quite understand. This was guiding me to the right path that I wanted to be on. I was learning more efficiently and using my time wisely. This was preparing me for the future and narrowed down my mind to focus on one thing, and one thing only; My education. I was becoming the student I have always wanted to be. Even my friends and family were taking notice in my changes. My teachers knew I needed to graduate high school and saw that I was not stopping at just getting the minimal passing grades. I was striving to receive the best grades I could possibly earn to prepare myself for…
