Lead My Example
Do not expect others to do as you tell them to unless you are willing to do the task yourself. Many people believe in leading by example; however some believe they are the exception to the rule. It expresses to your followers the person they are looking up to have the ability to do the same task that they are demanding their people to do. It is a proven fact the character and example of leaders directly affects their subordinates, and their actions. People should be mindful of our decisions because we are making examples daily. This statement has been proven true through all mankind history nonetheless modern problems and increasing national security demand strong moral leadership. The characteristics and examples set by upcoming leaders will shape our increasing generations and lead us into the unknown future. Leaders are constantly evaluated and critiqued by their subordinates. How can anyone trust a leader who says to do one thing but cannot demonstrate it themselves?

While there are leaders that like to lead by example there are those that enjoy the dictatorship role. They want to be in control of everything yet they do not want to do anything themselves. The word control means the power to influence or direct people's behavior or the course of events or to determine the behavior or supervise the running of. When you tell someone what to do and force them to do it the person will oftentimes rebel. It is like telling a child that they are not allowed to watch television repeatedly, eventually they will do it because it is in their nature. If you tell the child that they are not allowed to do something and then explain to the child they will understand. Set the example and not do it yourself then the child will see that they can trust you and they will follow. Males tend to be more visual than females so you have to show them what you want, however be careful because what you put in is what you get out. Not everyone is the same so there are different

Pope John Paul II constantly reminded his followers that it’s the people that matter more than results. If people know that they are loved than they will follow and results will come, not the other way around. They will follow because of love and respect rather than fear. My approach to leadership, when it is given to me, is to love each person in front of me as much as I possibly can. When I say love, I mean the type of love that Pope John Paul II showed when he forgave the man that tried to kill him. In loving that way, my hope is that others will encounter Christ, be it in checking up on people when I can tell they upset, or affirming them when I notice the good that they do. As John Paul II has shown me through the example of his life, leadership should never be about results, but about people. People that through my guidance may one day become the saints that they are meant to…

Others lead because they posses great minds and there are those who stumble into leadership because of the times they live in for example; the case of Jim Jones and the peoples Temple. Jones attracted many not because he was a great leader, but rather he approached people at a time in America that many needed a leader they could trust and someone to speak for their values. According to Robert C. Solomon leaders and followers each get and give trust to each other. Solomon mentioned that “…charisma is dangerous in the wrong leaders, but rather that it is a distorted perspective on leadership” (Ciulla, 2003, p.206). Also, according to Solomon the emotional core of leadership is trust. There is a difference between obligation and trust. In the case of Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple followers joined the church trusting, but it led to an obligation. (Ciulla, 2003).…

My identity and worldview of leadership are charismatic, and transformational style. From experience, ordering people what to do does not inspire them to follow you. You have to engage them, showing how following you will lead them to their hearts' desire. Bennis also states that leaders with a stronger charisma find it easier to attract people to their cause. As a part of persuasion a leader typically promise transformational benefits, such that their members will not just receive extrinsic rewards but will somehow become better…

My father and uncles’ instilled a statement in my head from a young age that I will never forget. This statement is closely related to the Law of Legacy and very relevant to being a leader in the modern business world. The statement only consists of a few words, but these words are very powerful and if this statement is followed, your reputation as a leader will be respected and hopefully emulated. The statement is, “Lead by example, do what is right, be the best you can be, and treat others the way you would like to be treated.”…

My third reason is, don’t be a selfish and disrespectful leader. If you are disrespectful and nobody likes you then nobody will follow you and take of what you say. If your selfish, then nobody will feel the need to be there and they won’t think of you as leader. My personal experience with this is, when I was in science class I was doing the whole experiment and the team felt like they were useless, so they just quit and left the experiment to me.…

    My Leadership Philosophy

Another basis of leadership are clear expectations or the “require” element of my leadership philosophy. Utilizing effective communication principles, we must ensure we clearly articulate expectations of those we lead. Expectations begin utilizing our Core Values as the bedrock principle and discussing how to apply those values in the environment we work. Respect is a clearly defined value I consistently stress of those I lead. I promise them respect and require the same from them. Not only as far as the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) has demanded it but also as human beings. That is a clear example of a professional vice personal power base; of which both are necessary to lead. An ongoing example of the requirement piece of my leadership philosophy is that if we don’t clearly outline our expectations, those we lead will be at a disadvantage in achieving the mission. A wise Master Chief once told me his leadership philosophy was simple, “decide; delegate; disappear”. As I pondered this quick and succinct philosophy I was impressed by its simple approach. No long definitions, no flowery words, and just succinct principles he followed. The alliteration element, whether planned or not, was genius as it commits easily to memory. Some would argue that is an unsupportive approach to leadership, but I would argue that the support element is achieved by making a clear decision, booking no confusion, delegating by clearly articulating the required action and…
