Laziness: Self-esteem and Hard Working Family
LAZINESS

Laziness is a disinclination to activity or exertion despite having the ability to do so. Terms that are often used for a person that is seen to be lazy include coach potato, slacker, bludger, and slouch. To me its just really not wanting to do anything thats physically or mentally exhausting. I believe that Jules Renard the French author said it best when he stated, “Laziness is nothing more than the habit of resting before you get tired”. I think the environment and household you are raised in has a lot to do with laziness. For example if you are raised in to a family that is all lazy and rely on government help to do everything for them and raised in a neighborhood where every one around them is most likely to end up in jail or dead, they will probably tend to believe there is no point of hard work and most likely the child will grow up with the lazy tendencies that he or she was raised around. On the other hand you take a child who is raised in to a hard working family and attends a good school in a good neighborhood where every one expects success, that to me can change a child's mind set that doesn't leave laziness as a option for them. In my case I grew up in Dorchester, MA in a rough inner city neighborhood. Most of the people I was raised around are either dead, in jail, or stuck in the street life and feel they have no choice and it's to late to get out. Fortunately for me despite the area I was raised in I lived in a household full of hard workers. My parents were both hard working people that bought there first home after being in the United States for only four years. My sister didn't fall far from the tree, she was a excellent high school student and went on to get her bachelors degree in music education at Berklee college of music and is now a music teacher. Even though I was raised in a hard working household my environment still affected me in some way making me some what lazy when it came to education. I felt like there was other

Even those who wish to work face challenges. Society has reared even friends and family to belittle those who attempt to follow their inspiration. Those with jobs considered undignified or improper are seen as inferior in hierarchical fashion. Following the arts is considered a waste of time, whereas following science or math is considered spectacular. Careers such as lawyers, doctors, and engineers, are highly valued for the money they produce and the education they require. This is inherently harmful, not only to those who wish to follow other professions, but also due to it providing wealth inequality. Rather than health and happiness, money becomes the priority. Moreover, someone who is unable to acquire a higher education might not be seen as fit for most jobs. It is a vicious cycle, where people need degrees to land jobs deemed decent, need money to attain said education, and need education to obtain the…

Growing up I had two loving parents, they always wanted the best possible for me. School was always challenging for me. I never liked it, and I never had a good work ethic. It started when I was young, my parents never made me do chores, and they always rewarded me for minimal efforts of work, and it did not help me in the long run. I had a very easy life growing up, but being spoiled does not help when you become an adult. It’s very hard to just gain a work ethic, it takes a lot of time and effort.…

Growing up in a neighborhood where you were automatically labeled a “screw-up” or a criminal has affected my peers and I in negative way. Many generations before mine have been discouraged to further their education, simply because of the marginalization of our ethnicity and the neighborhood where we have grown up. There is a disconnection between the language of my education and the language of my culture simply because in the schools my peers and I attend, we are not pushed enough to realize our full potential. Meanwhile at home, [most being hispanic] we are told that furthering our education is the most valuable thing we do have in life. In our hispanic families, we have a lot of support to follow our dreams and do whatever we need to in order to be successful, and although that is very helpful for many, it can only do so much. If we were pushed like this by the rest of the world and not treated as though we do not deserve to be successful, we would push to do our very best all the time.…

Growing up I was simply indigent. My father worked two minimal wage jobs while my mother raised me. Both of my parents could not speak English and did not reach high school, which made it more difficult for me. After my older half-sister left I was in charge of any interaction between my parents and the English-speaking world. From translating for them to reading bills I was always there. Even through all that my parents worked hard so that I can attend a private school. But going to the private school wasn’t inexpensive; because of economic situations I often wasn’t able to take my midterms/final exam for each of my classes. Not taking these essential tests would often drop my grades a letter or two. I…

The education I have received from my parents has been fundamental in my personal development. “I will give my best and I will not accept less than that” that was how my father made me start my day. Since I was little my parents erased the words “ I can not” and “I do not know” from my vocabulary. They taught me that I had to face my responsibilities and problems no matter what, for this reason, I was astonished when we moved to Texas two years ago and they told me that I could not be in 11th grade.…

We live in a country where the wealthy become wealthier and the poor become poorer. Due to the functions of our economy, very few of us can become successful. I was luckily born into what was considered a middle class family. As time progressed, everything became more expensive. With the same salary that my family had, they had to pay for higher insurance costs, food prices, gas prices, and survival needs.…

When I was in high school I was regarded by my family and teachers as a bright student. My mom always bragged about my report card because I received mostly A's and a few B's. I graduated with a 3.86 GPA. I went on to attend Sacramento City College where I did not make it past the first semester. I was devastated to realize that what I had relied on in high school to excel did not work for me in college. I lacked the tools necessary to continue in my education. A person's education cannot be measured by the mark they receive in a given test or class, but rather by their ability to understand, solve, and apply the solution to the problems and challenges they are presented with in life.…

I grew up in a poor neighbourhood in the Caribbean Island of Antigua. Although I had a few really fond childhood memories, family life was generally not a good experience for me. There was always the daily struggle for my parents to put food on the table for four children. Perhaps the reason for this was the fact that neither my mother nor stepfather even finished High School. Hence they both got trapped in low paying dead-end jobs. Growing up, the word ‘college’ was not commonly spoken at home. In fact there was never really any interest shown by my parents in my school life. This may be one of the reasons why I never felt compelled go further with my education. “When parents talk to their children about school, expect them to do well, make sure that out of school activities are constructive, and help them plan for college, their children perform better in school.” That is outlined in the online article “Research Spotlight on Parental Involvement in Education”, a report posted on National Education Association NEA official website. I always believed that college was important but felt a bit guilty about wanting to go when I knew that my parents were eagerly awaiting me to complete high school and find a job to help out with the mountain of bills…

As I a child all of could think of was being successful because growing up living in east Harlem you saw the people that weren’t going anywhere in life and you see where that got them in life. Growing up I have saw people not finish school and people who were in school for a very long time to get one degree. Many people in my family have either not graduated or still in college my aunt for example took her about six years to finish a two year degree because she constantly messed up and stop going to school and when back and procrastinated…

In complete honesty, I have lived a privileged life. I am provided with diverse opportunities, ranging from being home-schooled to the Catholic school I currently attend. Everyone has their hardships, and I certainly had my own, all were shaping and forming me into who I am at this point. I can honestly say my particular perspective has been remarkably determined by Kent Bellows Mentorship Program. It forced me to realize the opportunities I have been granted, take my passions into consideration, and most importantly, it shaped my aspirations and made me work for them.…

My urge to a higher education will lead the way to a successful career and possibly a beautiful home in a good community. I will also be able to set a good example for my little sister and my nephews and nieces. Having them realize that although our family has struggle for many years due to these intuitions that oppress us there’s always a way around it. I feel privilege in a sense because the struggles that my older family members went through were lived experiences that made me stronger and strive for a better outcome. The endless nights that my parents worked to provide me with food and shelter has kept me alive long enough to change history. I have also come to realize that these forms of Institutional Racism exist on many levels. The fact that we were redlined and segregated from good neighborhoods with lack of proper resources leads my brothers to dropping out of school. Forcing them to work at fast food places living check by check causing stress upon which lead them to gangs. Which eventually had them in jail facing time due to these forms of…
