In today’s society, law enforcement officers are faced with many issues. Different issues can arise in any level of the law enforcement agencies. One of the main things to help with the issues is for officers to be trained to the best of their ability. Each level of law enforcement is linked in one way or another. In this essay, I am going to explain some of the issues that the police department are facings in today’s society. Describe how the local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies currently interact with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). As well as, give suggestions for how the relationship between DHS and police departments may be improved. There may not be the right answer to fixing the issues of law enforcement agencies, but understanding what the issues are will be the first step. Helping fix the issues in the systems and between the levels of the law enforcement agencies will help the criminal justice system grow stronger. According to Schmalleger (2011) the issues facing police departments in todays are corruption, on-the-job dangers, and the use of deadly force derive from the very nature of police work (p.266). Some of the issues are because of the risk officers take to serve and protect our communities, unfortunately there are issues that officers take on their own. When an office choices not to do their job with honor they may choice corruption. “The abuse of police authority for personal or organizational gain” (Schmalleger, 2011). Corruption affects the entire community, the police department, and every police department worldwide. Part of our current problems stem from the level of drugs, the new drugs that are being produced, along with the gangs and guns in our cities.
