The article, “Phonological Assessment: A Systematic Comparison of Conversation and Picture Naming” by Lesley Wolk and Andrew W. Meisler, compares to methods of speech elicitation. Both of these methods have positive and negative aspects. Assessing phonological treatment as citing is easy and effective. It allows the Speech Pathologist to have control with a set list of words. However, a main weakness is that a citing procedure may not be accurate. A clinician can overestimate a child’s abilities. This leaves an unnatural sample. An advantage of obtaining a sample through spontaneous conversation is that it allows a sample from the most natural situation. However, a sample from children who do not want to communicate, are shy, or have behavioral problems will affect results.…

Santiago de Chile is a speech presented from Salvador Allende to Chilean workers in Chile Coup D’état, 1973. The intended audience of the speech was Chileans who suffered in the coup d’état. Throughout the speech, Allende addressed “workers of my country”, “modest women”, and “professionals” to defend the democracy from tyranny. The purpose of the speech is encouraging Chileans to make a sound judgement in fighting against the totalitarianism army force, while defending capitalism to thrive for peace and justice. This is because throughout the speech, Allende uses phrases like “I have faith in Chile and its destiny”, “I will always be next to you”, and “long live Chile! Long live the people! Long live the workers!” as an encouragement for…

“Public speech is the most valuable skill you can learn.” That’s the line that seems to start every awards ceremony spiel, every college essay, every application for speech captainship...oh hey, look. But despite the popularity of this idea, I feel there is a distinction to be made between the value of public speaking, and the value of being on the Neuqua Valley Speech Team. Over two years, I’ve learned that being a part of this team is more than just learning how to act, write, or prep a broadcast – it’s about learning how to connect with people, both in rounds and in real life. It is about responsibility and commitment to something greater than yourself. It is about striving to bring out the best in people. It is about discovering who you are through teamwork and collaboration, and I want next year’s novices to understand that. As a captain, I know that I can go beyond simply carrying out tasks and…

It was very obvious that she was experienced in the art of public speaking and seemed very confident throughout her delivery. Her posture we very professional yet, remained relaxed making it seem very natural. Ms.Lafaive did not move around the stage at all but was often gesturing toward her charts and graphs, sort of letting the audience know what was relevant to what she was currently saying. There where a few times throughout the speech that I could not hear the speaker well, but it was more due to the loudness of the audience than the loudness of the speakers voice. Overall though, her tone, pitch and voice variety was engaging. Ms. Lafaive was dressed very appropriately; wearing neutral, almost plain colors, she looked very professional. Her eye contact was slightly sporadic and she looked at her graphs…

We are told that what has been established should remain the same, and if you don’t see eye to eye with this perspective it is regarded as completely wrong, utterly wrong, and for some reason you are completely wrong. Wrong for going against what was already seen as right, but sometimes change is what we need to grow as a society. Two impactful stories gave me the clear vision I needed to establish that disobedience is key for filling in spots in our history books. Stories that impact the past, the present and can even impact the people of tomorrow.…

The introduction of the speech is very important. A good introduction can attract the attention of audiences and laid the foundation of a successful speech. According to the critique sheet of my classmates and the recording of my speech, I figured out that I did well in the introduction part. I began my speech with the interesting facts questions that were related to us in order to draw the audience in by making the connections. And my introduction included a preview which let my audiences know what I was going to talk about. Also, I felt confidence in my introduction since I had the eye contact and smile.…
