Lathe Machine
Purpose:

The purpose of the experiment is to learn the use and the purpose of lathe machine. To use the lathe machine to cut a given metal cylinder to required diameter.
Equipment:

* Metal Cylinder The dimensions of the metal bars had length of 101mm and diameter of 25mm.

* Vernier Caliper Vernier Caliper is a measuring instrument. It is used to measure the diameter or lengths and widths of objects up to 100th of a mm. I used it for measure of the length and width of the metal bar.

* Lathe Machine

A lathe is a machine tool which rotates the workpiece on its axis to perform various operations such as cutting, sanding, knurling, drilling, or deformation with tools that are applied to the workpiece to create an object which has symmetry about an axis of rotation.
Lathes are used in woodturning, metalworking, metal spinning, and glassworking. Lathes can be used to shape pottery, the best-known design being the potter's wheel. Most suitably equipped metalworking lathes can also be used to produce most solids of revolution, plane surfaces and screw threads or helices. Ornamental lathes can produce three-dimensional solids of incredible complexity. The material can be held in place by either one or two centers, at least one of which can be moved horizontally to accommodate varying material lengths. Other workholding methods include clamping the work about the axis of rotation using a chuck or collet, or to a faceplate, using clamps or dogs.

Lathe machine Components
Bed: Usually made of cast iron. Provides a heavy rigid frame on which all the main components are mounted.
Ways: Inner and outer guide rails that are precision machined parallel to assure accuracy of movement.
Headlock: Mounted in a fixed position on the inner ways, usually at the left end. Using a chuck, it rotates the work.
Gearbox: Inside the headstock, providing multiple speeds with a geometric ration by moving

    Wheel and axle is two disks or cylinders, each one with a different radius. They are used in a chain reaction where the wheel has something done to it to make the axle turn. They are used in cars and door knobs. An inclined plane is a plane that’s inclined at an angle. They are used to make work easier over a longer distance. They work by making someone go further to have less strain from being horizontal or vertical. Some examples of this is a hill, slides, and ladder. A lever is a bar that helps move heavy loads. They can transfer effort and work. They work by pushing on one side with weight on the other. Copies of this is teeter totters and wheel barrows. A wedge looks like a slice of cake or pizza but is usually wood or metal and is 3D. They are used to cut wood and can do many other things like hold doors open. They work by separating or holding items together. A screw is a cylinder with an inclined plane wrapped around it. It does work by pressing things together or putting things together. For example, they can press fruit making juice and books. A pulley is a wheel with a rope that lifts heavy weights. This can make work easier when oneself wants something from off the ground higher. They do work by getting pulled on one side to bring the object up. They can be used in construction to move like metal and…

    Among those inventions that are credited with passing into general practical use are the strut bridge, the automated bobbin winder, the rolling mill, the machine for testing the tensile strength of wire and the lens-grinding machine pictured at right. In the lens-grinding machine, the hand rotation of the grinding wheel operates an angle-gear, which rotates a shaft, turning a geared dish in which sits the glass or crystal to be crushed. A single action rotates both surfaces at a speed ratio determined by the…

    Question 4: Both the height and diameter of the cylinder were taken to find the volume; five times for both measurements. Vernier calipers were used to get these measurements by clamping the cylinder between the jaws of the calipers. By looking at the mark of the zero, in relation to the main scale, the line best lined up with a line from the main scale was taken down. Getting these numbers we can further calculate values for average and accuracy of the length of the cylinder.…

    Often screws have a head, which is a specially formed section on one end of the screw that allows it to be turned, or driven. Common tools for driving screws include screwdrivers and wrenches. The head is usually larger than the body of the screw, which keeps the screw from being driven deeper than the length of the screw and to provide a bearing surface. There are exceptions; for instance, carriage bolts have a domed head that is not designed to be driven; set screws have a head smaller than the outer diameter of the screw; and J-bolts do not have a head and are not designed to be driven. The cylindrical portion of the screw from the underside of the head to the tip is known as the shank; it may be fully threaded or partially threaded.…
