When I transferred to Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), I was fortunate to be selected to the Honors Transfer Fellows program. As a requirement of this program, I was required to complete an undergraduate thesis and take additional classes along with the regular curriculum for my major. While this project was a valuable experience, it was also challenging to balance the workload of conducting thesis research, attending classes, working part time, and working as a clinician at the MTSU Speech Clinic. Over the past year, I have developed skills, such as time management and prioritization, that have helped me succeed as a student at MTSU. Additionally, completing a thesis while attending classes and working has helped me become an independent student. To explain, over the course of the entire project, I had only two deadlines, one for the proposal submission and one for thesis submission. As a result, I had to create my own deadlines for various aspects of the thesis, such as data collection and analysis.…

First, I am one of the million transfer students who has attended multiple colleges; two junior colleges (both Blinn Colleges) and one four-year university (Sam Houston State University). I thought the transition would run smoothly from a junior to a four-year college, but it was quite difficult. You have to meet a certain GPA along with a certain amount of hours in order for you to be accepted and meet other requirements in order to be classified in the right class. Because one of my classes was intermediate I was classified as a sophomore, instead of a junior. I am not the only one of my friends who transferred to Sam, so did Katie Bourque. I interviewed her asking how successful her transfer was, and she said “all but one of her courses transferred and she contacted the Dean to make her Zoology count as her first Biology she needed for Sam.” When transferring colleges you must look at your degree plans and make sure the classes you took at your previous college meets the requirement of the degree plan at the university you are transferring to or if it could be equivalent to the class you need.…

The new community college for full-time students will not provide a degree in all areas, “All first-year students would be required to take a predetermined core curriculum and would then be limited to their choice of about 12 majors” (Moltz, 2009). The majors that were proposed will be in pre-career fields, which will be designed to assist students with transferability. The transferability requirements to four-year institutions have increased throughout the years and it is important that the two-year college focuses on making sure that student are academically on track to transfer. At times, community college students do not complete a bachelor’s due to the lack of preparation for what is expected of them once they transfer. The curriculum proposed requires full time enrollment and taking more than 12 units per semester, which will prepare students for a better transition to a four-year…

Paying rent while also taking maintaining a stable living environment takes quite a bit of effort and, fortunately, I have survived at least one semester. Hi, I’m Suzzana, I think you know that by now. I’m currently attending Camden County College. I am transferring because as you might know, most community colleges are two year schools. Community College has been great for me. I was never achievement orientated when I was in grade school. I was enrolled in an alternative school since the 8th grade. I was behind in my academics, but I would like to say I compensate in life experience. When I was younger around the age of 9 I was bullied a lot. I was chubby and I increasingly gained weight at that time. My influx of weight was the baggage of my emotions and my families struggles. My parents divorced when I was 10, my mom was escorted out by police. I only had my dad for a year. Then, I had missed…

In the Fall semester of 2013, I began my college career at Sandhills Community College with the end goal of receiving my associates degree and to transfer to a 4-year university to continue my studies. Although I initially wanted to start my college career at UNC Chapel Hill, I believed that I wasn't fully prepared or had the knowledge on how to be successful in a traditional learning environment, given that my twelve year home school education utilized the classical model. Additionally, I wanted to be financially responsible, for I would like to continue my education through a doctorate program. In high school, I thrived on my small community of classmates and the ability to learn independently. In addition, I was apprehensive of being confined…

Over the last few years, Texas State University-San Marcos has seen a significant increase in the number students applying and being admitted to the university. According to Hendricks (2010), from the fall of 2009 to the fall of 2010, the campus saw a 5.9% increase in the number of students attending the university. In the fall of 2010, the campus reached a new record enrollment of 32,586 students; Out of those, 3,930 were incoming freshman. A vast majority of freshmen and sophomores experience their first two years of college life spread out among the university grounds in dormitories or apartments. In order for many incoming students to attend, they must live on-campus unless they meet the requirements as stated by university policy. Although this seems like a small number of incoming students to provide housing to, many prospective students, especially freshmen, are now experiencing problems when applying for on-campus living.…
