Marriage is something that is not for everyone. There are many things that go along with marriage. Some are positive and some are negative. The relationship between two humans is very complicated. For example, if a couple does not agree upon something it may cause a fight. As seen in two stories we have covered, the relationships are not completely solid. Misunderstandings and secrets often cause Gabriel and Gretta Conroy, and Elisa and her husband Henry, have many complications.
To begin with, both couples have a difficulty with communicating. Gabriel seems to have not been aware of his wife's past. He finds it difficult to handle hearing about Michael Furey; “The smile passed away from Gabriel's face. A dull anger began to gather again at the back of his mind and the dull fires of his lust began to glow angrily in his veins;” he was thrown back by the news of his wife's past love affair. This is the woman Gabriel is married to, therefore, he should know about her past. Gabriel was also struggling with his outlook in life. Towards the end of the story, Gabriel has an epiphany and we are left with no exact answer as to what results come from it. The song, “The Lass of Aughrim,” brings tears to the eyes of Gretta Conroy. This secret causes Gabriel to rethink his life and the way he should live it. As for Elisa and Henry, things are much more complicated. There is not much of a secret but more of a wish of sharing the same interests. Both couples have epiphanies. For example, Elisa realizes that she needs her husband, though they may not understand each other completely.
