Laser Based Communication System.
Laser Based Communication System.

Introduction:- An optical communication system for inter and intra building communications can be built using the following three basic component. A light emitting element.
1. A light emitting element, which could be a laser diode or light emitting diode.
2. Transmission media such as optical fiber cable or free space.
3. A light receiving element, which could employ avalanche photo-diode, PIN photo-diode or any other light sensors like LDR.
Since the communications performance of the system depends on the overall characteristics of the above elements, the characteristics of the individual element should match. Here we present a one way optical communication system using a short wave-length visible laser diode as the light emitter source, free space as the transmission media and a light dependent resistor as the light receiving element. The system is ideal for speech communication between two adjacent offices or between homes on opposite sides of a road. The diagram of the system can be shown as below:-

LED (Light-Emitting Diode) is a two-lead semiconductor light source. It resembles a basic p-n junction diode (is a boundary or interface between two types of semiconductor material, p-type and n-type, inside a single crystal of semiconductor., which emits light when activated. When a fitting voltage is applied to the leads, electrons are able to recombine with electron holes within the device, releasing energy in the form of photons. This effect is called electroluminescence, and the color of the light (corresponding to the energy of the photon) is determined by the energy band gap of the semi-conductor. An LED is often small in area (less than 1 mm2) and integrated optical components may be used to shape its radiation pattern. Appearing as practical electronic components in 1962, [9] the earliest LEDs emitted low-intensity infrared light. Infrared LEDs are still frequently used as transmitting elements in remote-control circuits, such as those in remote controls for a wide variety of consumer electronics. The first visible-light LEDs were also of low intensity, and limited to red. Modern LEDs are available across the visible, ultraviolet, and infrared wavelengths, with very high brightness.…

Diode – is a semiconductor laser that is electronically pumped. They have the largest wave length selection, emits 800nm near infrared wavelength cw and is absorbed by melanin. Laser diodes are continuously emitting diodes from infrared to red, green or blue. Pulsed laser diodes or PLDs have wavelengths of 905nm and 1550nm. 905nm are single emitters. 1550nm are eye safe. A diode is a semi conductive metal which allows energy to travel in one direction.…
