Essay 1 Draft 3

Pressure can affect people in positive and negative ways. Individuals can be pressured to do better, to broaden their horizons, and to generally make more informed decisions. Positive pressure can be seen as having a support system, and though it may be rigorous and even sometimes seen as nagging, is very helpful to those who otherwise would need a nudge in the right direction. More often than not, pressure causes people to do things they don't want to do. That causes some people to be very unhappy and miserable. They feel like the pressure that they have to face isn’t beneficial or even a waste of time. It is very difficult to do something you don’t have the desire to do. One pressure is parental pressure. Parents pressure their children because they want what's best for them. They want them to be successful and have good educations, careers and soul mates. Parental pressure can prevent young adults from accomplishing their goals. Instead of following their own dreams, they would rather put theirs desires on hold or maybe not do what they had planned to please their parents. Often the decisions parents make for their children do not please their children. Parents believe because they have more life experience they know what's best for their children. Many children's desires are suppressed because they ignore their own dreams to please their parents. The parents are happy, but the children are miserable.

In the article “The Good Daughter," Caroline Hwang, discusses the parental pressure she has been experiencing. Hwang is an American born daughter of Korean immigrants who parents moved to the United States for a better future for her. Her parents want her fulfill the dream they have for her. They want her to be a lawyer, but she wants to be a writer. Hwang's parents weren't pleased with her choice of wanting to be a writer, and Hwang believes that because they made many sacrifices for her she should do what they want

Peer pressure and self-induced pressure are closely tied together because as the students see their peers succeeding it will drive them to do better than their peers in combination with their own already high goals and aspirations driving them to continually want to outdo what they have done in the past. Zinsser encourages students that there is more than one way to succeed and that it is important to relax during college and not get overwhelmed by all of the tension and stress. He also emphasizes the importance of making mistakes in the name of learning. By establishing authority on the topic of college pressures, implementing logical, consistent reasoning, and utilizing additional supporting evidence to bolster his argument, Zinsser delivers an extremely effective essay with “College Pressures.” In order to deliver an effective essay one must be viewed as an authority on the topic.
