When student Sasha Burden’s expose of the inner workings of The Herald Sun was published in the Melbourne University magazine Farrago, an internet controversy was born. Her criticisms of the paper were based on her experiences as an intern, which have led several commentators to attack her character and her motivations. The title of former Herald Sun editor Bruce Guthrie’s opinion piece An intern really hits the male on the head, if you’ll pardon The Hun (The Age, 12th August 2012) uses attention grabbing spoonerisms to establish an engaging and friendly tone. He contends that Burden’s actions were misjudged but that she had made some valid criticisms of a media landscape which values entertainment over importance. Effect of image

Guthrie’s attempts at balance are in marked contrast to the response offered by an anonymous author who created an internet meme found on www.memegenerator.net on the 13th of August 2012. This sensationalistic image denigrates Burden by focusing on her claim that male workers of the paper were sexist because they opened doors for her. The creator of this image juxtaposes her (misquoted) words with a photo that shows her scantily dressed and making an obscene gesture which positions the viewer to see the student as both hypocritical and absurd, thereby denying the validity of her claims. On the other hand the internet commentator “Charles” defends Burden’s actions (The Drum, 10 August 2012), contending that her exposure of “toxic” journalistic practices is necessary if print journalism is ever to evolve.
