Synthesis Paper for Langston Hughes
Introduction: Love is often regarded as an emotion that invokes extreme joy, hope and excitement. For example, Romeo and Juliet were a young couple who were so excited and hopeful about their love that they were willing to do anything to be together. However, there is another side to the feeling we call love that isn't so joyous. The other, darker side of love is expressed by three Langston Hughes poem which show us the heart-break, the abandonment and the desperation associated with falling in love.
Body 1: The heart-break displayed in the poem "Cora" is expressed by the woman's difficulty in finding someone that truly loves her. For example, in the poem it says "The ones I love. They always treat …show more content…
For example, in the poem it states "Don't know's I'd mind his goin' But he left me when the coal was low." (Hughes 223) This tells us that our character was probably left either late at night or early in the morning when the fireplace had been going for a while. Therefore, not only was she left alone, but she was left when it was cold and she had to fend for herself. Abandonment is a feeling that we have when we can't be close to the ones we want to be with. In society, there are people who may act as though they have been abandoned to gain attention from others. This may sometimes backfire and truly leave a person all alone. However, as unfortunate as it may seem, abandonment is a part of life. We must understand that in love and in life, you take the good with the bad. Abandonment is not a good …show more content…
For example, the character in the poem expresses this thought, "Up in a tower Tall as a tree is tall Gonna think about my man- And let my fool self fall." (Hughes 153) This shows a sense of complete hopelessness to the point where she feels like she has nothing to live for. Once again, this refers back to the story of Romeo and Juliet. In this classic tale, once Romeo, believes Juliet is dead, he proceeds to kill himself. In society, there are many times when people feel desperate as they go through life. Thus causing them to act rashly. On the other hand, some people do not have this problem because they have a more optimistic view on life. However, desperation is what we must learn to deal
