Land pollution is the deterioration (destruction) of the earth’s land surfaces, often directly or indirectly as a result of man’s activities and their misuse of land resources. It occurs when waste is not disposed of properly, or can occur when humans throw chemicals unto the soil in the form of pesticides, insecticides and fertilizers during agricultural practices. Exploitation of minerals has also contributed to the destruction of the earth’s surface. There are many effects caused by land pollution such as: erosion, siltation, and flooding, perils on people’s health, from infectious wastes and proliferation of disease-bearing animals. Land pollution is problem which produces from many reasons as follows: Urbanization, increase in agricultural land and Industrial activities and domestic waste. The problem of land pollution can be solved by: reduction, reuse and recycle.
Urbanization and industrialization are the major causes of pollution of the earth. Industrial Revolution set a series of events in motion that destroyed the natural reserves and environmental pollution, causing diseases in both humans and other species of animals
Anther causes of Land Pollution are Increase in agricultural land Industrial activities: As the human population grew there was a greater demand for food. This caused more land allocated to agriculture. Forest was cut down for this purpose. Also, Industrial activities also are a contributing factor to land pollution. For example,, in open cast mining, huge holes are dug in the ground and these form dangerously deep mining pools.. Heaps of mining waste is left behind and the west often\ contain several poisonous substances that will contaminate the soil.
The last causes is domestic waste : waste collected from homes, offices and industries may be recycled or burnt in incinerators, a large amount of rubbish is neither burnt nor recycled but is left in certain areas marked as dumping grounds. We throw away more things today and there is an increase in the quantity of solid waste. This has given rise to problems as new dumping grounds have to be found..
Land pollution is mainly caused by poor solid waste management. There are three answers to these environmental problems. YOU can Reduce, Reuse and Recycle:
The first solution is reduction: we can reduce the amount of waste that is produced by doing simple things like two-sided copying on paper and backyard composting. This will decrease the amount of waste that will be disposed of in landfills. The Government can raise awareness of the importance of reduction through campaigns and advertisements and encourage the public to participate actively in reduction strategies like waste exchange program. Reduction methods can have positive environmental impacts like conserving resources.
Anther solution of Land Pollution is reuse: another way to reduce the amount of waste produced is by reusing a product. We are reusing when we keep something and use them again for either the same or other purposes. When we go shopping at supermarkets, we can bring our own shopping bag to carry our groceries and cut down on the use of plastic bags. We can also bring our own lunchboxes to store our meals instead of disposing plastic containers after we use it. These are some simple ways that we can do to contribute.
The best solution for land pollution is recycle in the process of recycling; waste materials are processed industrially and then reformed into new or similar products. This helps us to renew our limited resources, and at the same time conserve the environment! Some of the waste materials that can be recycled are used paper, newspapers, plastic and glass bottles and aluminum cans. We should throw these waste materials into the appropriate recycling bins whenever we can, instead of throwing it into the rubbish bin. Public awareness can be raised and everyone can also take part actively in recycling activities.
