Without realizing it, the loneliness had hit her and a cloud of darkness had settled over her life. The loneliness were following her, just as her shadow. Day and night. She refused to accept the loneliness and tried to escape. Why do so many people end up with lonely souls? What are the consequences of that? What does one seek? It is commonly true that the loneliest moment in someone’s life is when they are watching their whole world fall apart, and all they can do is stare blankly. The short story “Land of the Lost” written by Stewart O’Nan focuses on a true to life act of being lonely and the consequence of the feeling.
The missing and most likely the death of a young girl has taken place and suddenly our main character is obsessed with the case. Even though she is not related to the girl, the certain case is all our main character can think and talk about. It becomes an immense part of her daily life and without giving it a thought, she puts her life as well as her health under danger to search for the missing girl. Such random actions of our main character make people around her surroundings judge her and ask questions about her mental health. Anyway, her motives are to be found in her personal life. Towards the beginning of the story, the reader gets the feeling that she is a normal woman who has an ordinary life. The main character of the story is a woman whose name is not revealed. We do not get to hear a lot about our main character, which might suggest that her personal life is not exciting or interesting. Eventually our main character works as cashier in a supermarket, is divorced and lives alone with her German shepherd Ollie:” She was a cashier at a BL-LO in Perry whose marriage had long since broken up. Soon after that her two boys moved of the house, leaving Ollie, her German shepherd, as her sole companion”.1 In this quote, it seems like her job and personal life is very uninteresting, and it is not the way she
