“Pain is temporary. Quitting lasts forever,” this small and presumably nonsignificant quote by Lance Armstrong, is actually one of the most urgent and meaningful things I have ever learned. In life I will have obstacles, sometimes they're minuscule and sometimes they're more significant. If I can stay focused, they don't become anything. But, if I let that problem get to you it will become a major stumbling block in life. My stumbling block was about 2 and a half years ago. At that time I found out that my Father was an addict. At first, he was attending reformer sessions, getting counseling, and keeping tabs with his family. This continued for about 1 a month when he just fell off the radar. We didn't hear from

    Because of my addiction I lost their trust. I also lost custody of my children because I simply was not fit to be a parent at that point in time. Over the course of my addiction my family and loved ones began to realize that they couldn’t even trust me enough to leave me alone in their house. I was not allowed to spend the night at anyone’s house, let alone live with them. This trust issue got so bad over time that when I was around my family they constantly hid or watched their purses or personal belongings because they were scared that I was going to steal something. My addiction made me do horrible things to the people I loved the most. I obviously felt horrible about these things but the drugs had a very strong hold on me. Because of these things my family and loved ones eventually wrote me off completely. I was not even welcome for Thanksgiving or Christmas. These years of my life were horrible ones, and I still to do this day do not know how I got through them. The biggest problem that my addiction caused between myself and my family was losing custody of my children. I knew that they should not be with me and I ended up leaving them in the care of my mother until social services got involved in the situation. Eventually I ended up losing my legal rights to them. This situation caused me so much sadness, grief, anger, shame, and guilt. Lots of guilt. These feelings seemed to fuel my addiction even more.…

    This was my first experience at an alcoholics anonymous meeting and it was very interesting and in a way uplifting. At St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Middleburg, Fl. the AA group was called “Soul Savivors” there were people who had come from different walks of life such as a single parent that started when she was fifteen to a School teacher that started when he was eight. The group meeting that I attended was rather small, a total of six were in attendance and 3 were missing.     Malcolm X once said, “There is no better than adversity. Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve your performance the next time.” In the face of overwhelming adversity, what gives me the cause to hope? Ever since I was little I have been competitive in all different levels and types of sports, many of which I have stared right into the face of adversity. Injuries, family problems, and being strewn out between 400 miles of highway between Tennessee and Georgia have given me plenty of reason to give up on my sports…my true passion and desire. Did I give up? Did I let the face of adversity tear me down? No. I let my desire to persevere build me up even stronger. I have been asked, “What gives me the cause to hope?” Being able to prove to myself and others that I am capable of withstanding and overcoming any obstacle that life and adversity throws at me, is what gives me the cause to hope. I have learned over the years that no matter how hard or how massive the obstacle, if you believe in yourself and have faith in you and your abilities, you will persevere. You have to be wondering, it cant just be the desire to prove myself that gives me cause to hope, what else could it be? I have faith in myself and in my character traits. I know that everything I am faced with I will fight with the heart of a C.H.A.M.P.I.O.N. To me the word C.H.A.M.P.I.O.N. means: Courage, Hard Work, Attitude, Motivation, Perseverance, Integrity, Outstanding, and Desire to be Number One.
