Dental Outreach
Many Filipinos are in need of better dental care that could be given through proper education and regular check-up. Each year, Lamoiyan Corporation supports various groups, organizations, and government agencies, in their dental outreaches particularly to marginalized communities around the country. The outreaches include basic dental work, from teeth cleaning to extraction. A part of their objective is to also teach communities about proper brushing and care for their teeth. The company extends support by providing supplies, equipment, and in some instances, manpower. This is in line with the company’s belief that healthy teeth lead to a healthy and productive life.
Waste Water Management
In support of the “Clean Water Act of the Philippines” Lamoiyan Corporation uses recycled waste water that is treated and disinfected for non-commercial purposes in the office. It is the company’s contribution to help promote and encourage protection of the country’s natural resources. Around the Lamoiyan compound are lush gardens of flowering plants and fruit baring trees. These are products of recycled waste water among other things.
Operation Smile
Every child deserves a happy smile. This is why Lamoiyan Corporation supports Operation Smile, an international organization that performs corrective surgery on children with cleft palate. The company partnered with the organization to put up the first Cleft Palate Care Center in the country that is located in Sta. Ana Hospital in Manila. Lamoiyan Corporation put up an adjacent dental clinic to serve the patients of the center as well.

Dr. Thomas Romo, the director of facial, plastic and reconstructive surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital and the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, runs the foundation, which was started in 2002. Romo has treated children with deformities all around the world and wanted to bring that idea home to the U.S. The organization’s intent hasn’t changed since its inception: correcting low-income children’s facial deformities, such as a cleft lip, or facial palsy, says Romo. Concourse Dental is a small private dental office where both the dentist and the dental hygienist work closely with the patient to practice preventive dentistry through patient education. I observed how if the patient is diagnosed with a oral health disorder, the dentist and dental hygienist would talk with the patient after receiving treatment. This opportunity taught me that one on one counseling with the patient can change the patient's lifestyle that contributed to the oral health disorder. Ultimately, this dental office imparted me the importance of delivering dental education to…

SDAB represents the UMD Chapter for the National Children’s Oral Health Foundation’s (NCOHF) Students United for America’s Toothfairy program. Through this organization, I visit elementary and middle schools in the College Park and Washington D.C. area and teach young children the proper way to brush their teeth and how important oral hygiene is to their health. Just recently, I organized a drive to collect dental supplies for the Boys and Girls Club of PG County as part of the NCOHF’s Smile Drive campaign. As a leader of this organization, I’ve served as a mentor to other pre-dental students and created innovative projects and initiatives to foster participation in activities.
