Lamb to the Slaughter

In the story ‘Lamb to the Slaughter’ by Roald Dahl. The author made me shiver at the behaviour of the character because both the main characters are two faced and cold blooded.

This story is about a Lady who kills her husband with a leg of lamb and gets away with killing him.

At the beginning of the story the atmosphere seems warm and cosy. The curtains were drawn, lamps alight, whisky ready on the table with two glasses. Mary Maloney was waiting for her husband to come home from work. She was knitting patiently looking at the time when he would come; “Now and again she would glance up at the clock”.

There was always something cheerful about her and in everything she did. Her whole body had a new placid look. This was her sixth month with the child. She was tremendously blissful about it.

When Patrick, Mary’s husband came home she treated him with a smile on her face and made him a strong drink of whisky and a weak one for herself. She was back again in the chair sewing again. He was sitting opposite to her holding the glass. She was observing him; “She loved him for the way he sat loosely in a chair, for a way he came in a door, or moved slowly across the room”. This shows how much she loved him and cared for him.

However the atmosphere changed from dreamy and loving to tense and frustrating. He wasn’t his usual self. He drank more strong whisky than usual; “She noticed that the new drink was dark amber with quantity of whisky in it”.This proves that the drink was stronger and that he was

She went into the living room, saw him standing by the window with his back to her, and stopped. "I've already told you," he said. "Don't make supper for me. I'm going out." At that point, Mary Maloney simply walked up behind him and without any pause, she swung the big frozen leg of lamb high in the air and brought it down as hard as she could on the back of his head. She might as well have hit him with a steel bar.” People may tend to underestimate the power of those who seem to be week. Mrs. Maloney may have seemed to be a very nice gentle woman that looks week compared to her husband but then ends up killing him. Women are typically, smaller and may not appear as strong as men so, being able to knock a man in the head with the force of a steel bar is astonishing. She was then able to come up with a plan to make it appear as if she had no idea what had happened to look innocent. This goes to show not to under estimate the week. Thereby, I think Roald Dhal wanted us to think that Mrs. Maloney was a victim in the story because she was devoted and respected her husband unlike him, and even though she may seem week she covered up her…

The husband undressed her, abandoning her only long enough to root beneath the eiderdown for her flannel gown. She stood naked except for her bra, which hung by one strap down the side of her body; she had not the impetus to shrug it of. She looked down at the right nipple, shriveled with chill, and thought, How absurd, a vertical bra. "If only there were instant sleep," she said, hiccupping, and the husband bundled her into the gown and went out and came back with a sleeping draught guaranteed swift. She was to drink a little glass of cognac followed by a big glass of dark liquid and afterwards there was just time to say Thank you and could you get him a clean pair of pajamas out of the laundry, it came back today.…

In the stories we read, Lamb to the Slaughter and A Jury of Her Peers, women felt victimized, and killed their husbands. While they both took action for a different reason, those actions yielded the same result: a dead man, a guilty woman, and a criminal investigation. It seems that, based on the ending of A Jury of Her Peers, neither one of them will be caught or punished for their actions, because both women refused to admit to their crime. Mary Maloney (Lamb to the Slaughter) left her dead husband and went to the grocery store in an attempt to act normal, making it look like Patrick Maloney was killed by a third party while she was gone. She then fed the murder weapon, a leg of lamb, to the detectives. Similarly, Minnie Wright (A Jury of Her Peers) pleaded innocence, claiming she was asleep when someone snuck into her bedroom, strangled her husband, who was sleeping beside her, and then vanished without a trace. They were both too afraid to take responsibility for their actions.…

Her head had shrunk considerably, the empty sockets of her eyes receding deep within. Maggie’s stomach, where the Coroner had crudely sewn her back together, had pulled apart at the stiches leaving gaping diagonal crevices. The wedding dress they buried her in was wrinkled. Her hair, while wiry, laid neatly groomed. Sam, having taken her brush from the bathroom, had done it before…
