Dear Dr.Mann,

Hello, my name is Hannah Formanek. I have studied the National Geographic documentary on Otzi the Iceman in my honors 9 Literature class. I would appreciate your consideration of my opinion. I would believe that Iceman ritually killed. I have many reason I believe this.
One reason I believe that he was ritually killed was because of his power. Otzi was believed to be a head chief of a clan. He was found with a copper bladed axe, which represented power. Someone in his clan may of been jealous of Otzi and the power that he had. So the person thought if could kill Otzi he would gain his power.
Another reason to support my idea that this was a ritual killing is the location and timing of his death. Otzi was 50 years old when he died. He was the oldest of his clan and a lot of power is bestowed upon the oldest of the clan. When Otzi went on a hike the murderer followed him into the mountains. The murderer thought it would be a perfect place to kill Otzi. The murderer took a stone and struck Otzis head. Then he shot Otzi with a bow and arrow. The arrow ruptured a main artery in Otzis chest. The murderer took the bow off of Otzis back and left, what the murderer didn't know was that the arrow from the bow was still in Otzi.
In conclusion these were my many reasons why I thought Otzi the Iceman was ritually killed. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Regards,

Hannah

Ritual slaughter is known as shechitah, and the person who performs the slaughter is called a “shochet,” both from the Hebrew root Shin-Chet-Tav, meaning to destroy or kill. The method of slaughter is a quick, deep stroke across the throat with a perfectly sharp knife called a “chalaf” with no nicks or unevenness. This method is painless, causes unconsciousness within two seconds, and is widely recognized as the most humane method of slaughter possible.…

Now just like Jack and Roger, the littluns depicted society the most in taking and never giving back. The littluns are used to portray the people in society who don’t work, and abuse the government system to get checks and food stamps. The littluns abused both Ralph and Jack just like the government system. They didn’t want to build shelters when Ralph asked them to, but when the shelters were finished they went and took them as theirs. Also with Jack, they wouldn’t hunt alongside him, but when there was pig killed, they would reward themselves with the meat. The littluns were the majority of the boys on the Island and affected the boys hugely, not in a good way. With the littluns not working this only left Ralph, Jack, Roger, Simon, Sam, Eric,…

Initially scientists thought he had frozen to death in the harsh weather; however, in 2001 an X-ray examination revealed an arrowhead was lodged in Ötzi’s left shoulder, that eventually lead to his demise. One of the four individuals who fought Ötzi pulled the arrow shaft out of his shoulder to avoid suspicion. The position of the arrowhead in his left shoulder, and the spot relative to where he died baffled the scientists. An experienced hunter had to have taken the shot based on elevation…

The researchers changed their mind about how Ötzi died a few times based on what they found when examining him. The first thing they found was the arrowhead, the arrowhead confirmed he was killed and didn’t die of natural causes. After that they found blood in his brain which leads the researchers to believe that he was killed by blunt force trauma to the head. The final pieces of evidence was the food they found in his stomach and the ax that was left with his body. The scientists thought if he was running away from something he wouldn’t have eaten a big meal therefore the final conclusion was Ötzi was killed by someone he knew possibly from his community. This point is also supported because Ötzi’s ax was left with him which meant the person who killed him didn't want to be discovered with such a rare tool for the time period because others would know it was Ötzi’s ax.…

Scientist had done an analysis of Otzi and was able to discover that he spent most of his life in the Austro-Italian area. Scientist also analysed the left over minerals from his teeth, bones, and intestines and compared them with water and soil samples that had been with drawn from a vast area of alpines. The results of the Analysis had suggested that Otzi came from a village in the Eisack Valley in Southern Tyrol, yet he never moved more than 60km from his birthplace.2…

The idea about the endowed powers of making the items that no one could have been capable of creating may lead to the reason of the Otzi’s murder. It was believed that if the man could make the worshipped tools, therefore he is able to do anything equally hard, for example heal the dying. Otzi wasn’t, in fact, local in the village that was not far from the place where he passed away. So it could have been thought that he was walking by that village with the intentions of trading something. He was asked to complete some actions that were considered to be out of boundary, let’s imagine, heal the dying human being. Consequently Otzi misstepped with the request of local settlers and therefore didn’t earn so much reputation, he payed, in fact, with his life for such failure. This idea supports the hypothesis about…

In the story of the Odyssey Odysseus returns home after a long trip and finds out their are many people trying to win over his wife. Over the course of twenty years their were over 100 wooers living in his house. When Odysseus finally returns home Penelope has a test for the wooers which blows Odysseus cover. After that he kills all of the wooers and has anybody involved killed also. I think that Odysseus did the right thing. The reason is because if his people were loyal they would not let people win over his wife. Odysseus punishment was not harsh for the people involved either he would have done what the death sentence in some states He hung them for having connection to the wooers. Just the wooers living in his house justified his actions.…

Homer easily writes about Antinous’ death and leaves such a strong impression as he describes how the arrow pierces through his neck, and blood is left spurting from his nose (22.12-18). Also, the details with the death of Melanthius by torture (22.180-209). However, if Homer was opposed to the killings, the descriptions would be short and shallow to avoid others from gaining interest in Odysseus’ slaughter. Homer also describes Odysseus looking as if he was a proud lion returning with a kill after destroying all the suitors in the hall, which would stand as a strong, positive description of a hero (22.426-432) and again in Book 23…

It is ironic how both of these men's lives were good until some information was spread around that either tore them apart, ruined them, or both. Information getting to them is what led to the end of both Okonkwo and Oedipus. For Okonkwo it was Christianity. When Christianity moved into his area and started taking over, he just gave up. The information that the Christians were preaching, made so much sense that many people began to convert. This effected Okonkwo in a big way, especially when his own son converted. Eventually, after many failed efforts to stop Christianity, he hangs himself. Oedipus on the other hand never actually killed…

After Christian colonizers invade Umuofia, the clan holds a meeting only to be interrupted by the head messenger from the District Commissioner. In anger, Okonkwo “dr[aws] his machete, [which] descend[s] twice and the man’s head lay beside his uniformed body” (204). However, the clan “had broken into tumult instead of action” with “fright in that tumult” and Okonkwo returned home and committed suicide (205). As Christians come to spread their influence in Umuofia, Okonkwo feels a threat to his power. With his dangerous lust for power, Okonkwo acts thoughtlessly. His brisk decision to behead the messenger rests upon his need to assert and maintain power. Yet, Okonkwo’s clan does not respond with cheer or pride for their beloved hero, but rather fear and confusion as him Okonkwo was a senseless commoner. Okonkwo sees the lack of impact from his action and discerns his loss of dominance and power over the clan. The people of Umuofia no longer respects him and Okonkwo no longer holds power that made him worthy. Thus, Okonkwo rejects a life without power and commits suicide. While both Okonkwo and Kurtz dies because of their greed for power, Kurtz’s last moments before death reveal his sudden awareness of his insignificant material desires. As Kurtz rides the steamboat away from Africa, his fatigued body from living an unhealthy savage life fails him. Kurtz’s dying words, “The horror! The horror” reflect “a moral…
