Laila's Character Analysis
How does Laila feel about being pregnant with her second child (Zalmai) at the beginning of section 4? Why does she feel this way? What does she contemplate about?

Laila grows up with the constant feeling that her mother is very caught up with Laila’s brothers’ lives, and lacks the playing role of a mother in Laila’s life. This is evident when Laila states, “People shouldn’t be allowed to have new children if they’d already given away all their love to their old ones.” Laila adores Aziza, her newborn daughter who after all, is Tariq’s child. However, when she becomes pregnant with Rasheed’s child she contemplates whether abortion is a better option in this case. I think the reason Laila contemplates such a thing is not because of her character

Lena Lingard intrigues me. She’s gentle even though she’s lived on the farm her entire life and she manages to make the littlest things exciting with her charisma. In ways, her adventurousness and excitement make her similar to Tony. However, they differ in that Ántonia possesses a quiet beauty and inner strength that contrasts with Lena’s liveliness. It’s strange-- I dream the same dream “a great many times, and it [is] always the same. I [am] in a harvest-field full of shocks, and I [am] lying against one of them. Lena Lingard [comes] across the stubble barefoot, in a short skirt, with a curved reaping-hook in her hand, and she [is] flushed like the dawn, with a kind of luminous rosiness all about her. She [sits] down beside me, [turns] to me with a soft sigh and said, ‘Now they are all gone, and I can kiss you as much as I like.’ I...wish I could have this flattering dream about Ántonia, but I never [do].” (109) I love Ántonia and her steady independence but I cannot see her in my dreams in…

Duras redetermines the idea of the character in Savannah Bay. The three characters of Madeleine, Jeune Femme and Savannah cannot exist in their own rights. They all depend on each other’s action, memories, and admissions. Madeleine’s fragmented memories reflect her fragmented character. She is never a complete character, and the audience will never be granted a full picture of who she is. Jeune Femme is reliant on Madeleine for the representation of her mother, Savannah. Thus, it becomes unimportant to access the character of Jeune Femme, who, unlike Madeleine and Savannah, is not even accorded a name; she is merely a vessel present to retrieve information relating to the character of Savannah. Yet, Savannah is always absent. She is a character…

Laura, after teaching school and visiting Eugenio in prison, comes home to be warned by Lupe that Braggioni is waiting for her. Even though she hates his presence, she allows him to sing to her. “He scratches the guitar familiarly as though it were a pet animal, and sings passionately off key, taking the high notes in a prolonged painful squeal” (Porter 1). She fears him, as he is known for his meanness and pride; she does her best to tolerate him. For the past month he has been spent every night with her. Laura is in the dangerous mess of attempting to fight his advances without seeming to do so. His “gluttonous bulk . . . has become a symbol of her disillusions” (Porter 2) with riot and leaders. Braggioni has come to represent the disunion between her idealistic view of life and reality.…

Rasheed and Laila's marriage begins in deceit, due to the fact that the main reason Laila agrees to marry him is because she finds out she is pregnant and know that she won't be able to support her child alone. Laila then came up with the plan of marrying Rasheed and sleeping with him so that he would believe that the child was his, this starting a relationship with lies. This influences Laila to continue to lie and deceive Rasheed, something she is not accustomed to before, as she was always honest to her parents. Laila, unlike Mariam, who stayed truthful, learned to rebel against Rasheed even without his knowledge. She did this by stealing money from him and formulating an escape plan. This shows how much Rasheed and his lifestyle have influenced…

Although Elizabeth Lavenza is not present for most of the novel, she is a very pivotal character. Elizabeth is a prime example of how women were viewed as minor characters in a man’s story for the time period in which the book was written. The novel Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, includes many instances where women are inferior compared to men. The main example that the novel displays this is through the character, Elizabeth. She represents a woman who cannot seem to gain any power over her life, and once she gets that opportunity, a man takes it away.…

Lena cried over very few things. She might cry when she threw up and she’d sometimes cry at emotional proclamations. On an average day, the closest Lena ever got to crying was a clenched jaw and stern expression. However, Lena being seven weeks pregnant meant that every day was incredibly far from being an average day and that crying wasn’t as elusive as it once had been in the Zor-el household.…
