Unionized and non –unionized organizational structure

In this globalization era, different kinds of companies came to the consumer world for fulfillment of consumer’s needs. The current global business environment is characterized by the rapid growth of a number of organizations. In every organization employees are the vital component for a successful of a business. These employees are human beings so they have some right in a working environment .To protect their right in working environment they need a group of people to raise their voice in front of higher authority. These way unions are evolved in an organization environment but some companies or organization not allowed growing a union in their company. This leads to development of mainly two categories of organization around the world. That is unionized and non – unionized organization. In a non -unionized work place the employees have a direct contractual relationship with their employers whereas in unionized work place the employee relationship with employers through union (Flora, n.d). That means union act as an intermediator between employees and employers. This intermediator makes a contractual relationship employers regarding employee wage, work hours, working environment, safety, etc. This is the principle difference between unionized and non -unionized organization. This point out much practical difference of these two kinds of organization. That is, unionized workers have collective agreements, which are elaborated written contracts for protecting the rights of employees in a work place and it also tells employees duties and responsibilities towards employers. But non – unionized workers have individual contract of employment between employers and employee. This specifies salary, work hours, benefits .etc. Both type of organization having its own advantages and disadvantages. Following explanation gives more clarity on this. Historically, Unions are first emerged in the world in 19th century .This concept comes through various strikes and significant political movements happened in all over the world. During that period, low salary for the job, long working hours, insecure and unsafe working environment for the employees led to the employees coming together to solve and address the problems. This leads to the development of unions in a work place. In short, unions enabled workers to gain their right in a work place. The unionization in a work place brings advantages and disadvantages of both employees and employers. There are several advantages when employees become part of a unionized environment. That is, unionized workers experience much more job security than their non-unionized counterparts, because this union makes the final decision about disciplinary action or termination about that a particular employee, but in non –unionized work place employees future on that job depends on employer’s one can’t raise questions regards of termination of employee from the work ,whereas in unionized work place ,They also can file injustice or complaints with their union representatives, who then take them up with to in front of management on their behalf. Unions are careful when it comes to working conditions, in order to make sure a safe and friendly working environment to their members (Gregg, 1991). Similarly the management also has advantages when the organizations become unionized. A significant advantage for managers is that collective agreements made with unions establishes a set of agreement regards to wages, work hours etc. That can't be disputed until the contract expires between union and employer. This makes the costs combined with pay and benefits more predictable for managing team .This way managers can set their future goals. A...
