Labor and Delivery
One Special Delivery

On February 12, 2010 a day I will never forget. I started my daily routines cooking and cleaning. Then all of a sudden I began to feel weak, my vision was blurry, I felt dizzy, and it felt as if my head was about to explode. When this happened I immediately called my primary doctor to schedule an appointment. I was really frightened and confused. At the time, I had no idea what was going on. My doctor did blood work and ran test to figure out why this happened.
My doctor later revealed to me that I was being diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I then began to question him what was that and he explained that it’s carbohydrate intolerance during pregnancy. I was shocked at the moment I could speak no more.
I then followed up an appointment with an OB/GYN (obstetrics and gynecology), after seeing them a few months later on July 30th at 11:13p.m. I was rushed to Archbold Memorial and delivered my baby boy, due to gestational diabetes; he stayed in the NICU for three months.
I can still remember hearing this soft cry that stole my heart, after seeing him go through such painful things, my two year old son is still here doing things way above average that children will do at his age. Internal fetal monitoring is accomplished with a fetal scalp electrode that is a direct electrocardiogram of the FHR and therefore produces the most accurate FHR tracing having an advantage over the external monitoring. The FSE is attached to the fetus during a vaginal exam and then connected to a fetal monitor. Because the risk of transmission to the fetus is increased by the small puncture in the fetal scalp, use of internal scalp electrodes should be avoided if at all possible in the presence of known maternal infections such as HIV, hepatitis or GBS. Fetal scalp monitors are also avoided in preterm infants because of the increased risk of ventricular hemorrhage.…

When I was five years old, I began to notice that things were not quite right with my body. I was getting sick a lot, and always found myself going to the bathroom. In addition to that, and something that also supplemented the bathroom situation, was that I was always thirsty and in need of a drink. After a while my mother decided to take me to the doctor’s office, where they did some blood testing to hopefully determine what was wrong with me. The results came back, and they said that I had Type 1 Diabetes. The immediately took me to the hospital, Childrens Hospital of Pittsburgh, where I was hooked up to an IV and stayed in the emergency room for an entire week. What happened would be something that changed my life from that moment forward.…

A new paper in the British Medical Journal by Jan Blustein, MD, PhD, of New York University's Wagner School and a professor of Medicine and Population Health at NYU School of Medicine and Jianmeng Liu of Peking University examines the evidence as to whether newborns delivered by C-section are more likely to develop chronic diseases later in life. While the jury is still out and research is ongoing, recent studies underscore the need for health care providers to discuss with expectant parents the risk of babies born through cesarean section developing obesity, asthma, and diabetes, according to the paper by Blustein and Liu.…

At 12:30 at night on June 1, 2015, my life would soon change forever. I was pregnant with my first child and my water had just broken. My mom rushed me to the hospital where I was immediately put in a private room, in the hospital bed where I was about to deliver my first child, a son. He came so quickly (5 & 1/2 hours in total) and I had requested no pain medications and turned it down on several occasions as the medical staff pleaded with me to use it. The pain began to become more and more unbearable, so much so that I honestly felt paralyzed from my waist down. My body was taking over to my surprise and I was just there with my legs in stirrups. They seemed immovable and with the pains coming faster, it is as if they stopped receiving any of the signals my brain was sending to them.…

I was born on February 24, 1995 during the morning as day broke, coming into this world two month before I was expected. An undeveloped baby born 4 pounds 9 ounces, falling out of the normal range for the weight of a newborn. Moreover, I would be born without the sucking sensation, something crucial to a newborn in early development. When I was born my mother would not hold me because of these factors in her fear of losing another child. My brother whom I get part of my name from was diagnosed as stillbirth only after a few hours of having breath inside his body. At any point I should have not survived from mother who would not hold her child, being born premature, being underweight, and having no sucking sensation. It was perseverance that…
