The purpose of this lab was to determine which concentration of Miracle Gro was ideal for the germination of seeds. I hypothesized that the 1.25% concentration of Miracle Gro would allow the plant to grow the fastest, unfortunately, my data does not support my hypothesis. According to the information we collected, the amount of concentration with the fastest speed and greatest height of growth was the 0% with plain tap water (control group). Two days after “planting,” my group measured the seed with the greatest rate of growth: 0% exhibited 2.5 cm of growth, 1.25% had 0.9 cm, 2.5% showed 1.2 cm, 3.75% displayed 0.8 cm, and 5% had 0.5cm of growth. As evidenced by the data collected, the height of the sprout decreases as the percent of concentration increases. We checked the growth of our mung bean seeds a second time and we observed the results: 0% exhibited 15 cm of growth showing signs of growth through its stalk, roots, and leaves. The 1.25% and 2.5% both grew 2 cm and began sprouting a stalk. The 3.75% and 5% turned dark brown and appeared to have shrunk which are signs that the seed’s embryo is dead. The data did not match our expected data, because the Miracle Gro had some way prevented the imbibition of the seed which is why the 3.75% and 5% died. Imbibition is a critical developmental process in seeds and our control group with only water demonstrated the most successful amount of growth.…
Gregor Mendel is an Australian monk, who worked in a garden at a monastery. He experimented with pea plants, and soon became known as the father of genetics. The reason he studied pea plants was because they grow quickly, the traits can be easily observed, and the plant is easy to pollinate. Mendel’s method was to control the pollination of the pea plants and create offspring’s of the two plants that were pollinated together. Using self-pollination and cross pollination, Mendel was able to select plants that had specific traits and observe the traits that appeared in their offspring. The F1 generation is the offspring that is a cross between two parents. The F2 generation is the offspring that is a cross between two individuals in the same F1 generation. A dominant factor is the dominating factor, and the one that masks the effect of the recessive factor for the same characteristic. A recessive factor is one whose effect is taken over by the dominant factor for the same characteristic. Basically, a trait that is controlled by a recessive factor would not appear when paired with a trait controlled by a dominant factor.…
I think for both of the graphs show that the treatment with the algae and daphnia was something to definitely look at. There was a significant difference between the initial and final that is very high in scientific interest. Patterns of plant successional change in Gatineau Park, Old Chelsea, were studied quantitatively. The relations between different successional stages of plant communities and abiotic factors were descried. To test these, we went to the fields, and worked on two transect in groups of 4. We counted the trees and measured the diameter at breast height (dbh) for tree with a dbh value greater than 2cm. The dbh measurements (cm), percentage of fern cover and percentage of bare ground were recorded and used to perform statistical analysis. No significant variations in the distribution of abundant tree species using chi2 analysis and percentage of fern cover using t-test analysis were observed between the compared sites. No significant variations found in the interquadrat analysis, and mean dbh of abundant tree species and percentage of bare ground between the sites compared. The results verified the stated hypothesis and were supported by literature sources.…
We will need enough water from the marsh to fill all four tanks needed in the Elodea experiment as well as the beakers/tupperware containers in the Daphnia portion of the experiment. This is also true for the duckweed needed from Nahant Marsh: we will need to collect enough for both tests to our hypothesis which will be enough to treat two tanks with Elodea and half of the containers for Daphnia. Once all of these materials are collected we will create our tanks to observe the Elodea. All of the tanks will have 10 Elodea plants (for the sake of replication) in 1 inch of tank rocks and filled with the water from Nahant Marsh. The independent variable in this test will be whether or not the water in each tank will be treated by duckweed and whether or not the tank will have extra nutrients (1 inch of topsoil) added. The setup of the tanks is shown in Table 1 below. Each tank will be observed for 4 weeks. When I found out that there was a paper due on having to take a bubble bath with a rubber duck, I was thinking, “why? How very odd but okay, I guess I’ll do it.” Then I found out that we had to bring the rubber duck to school and I was like, “really? Uhm... Okay then.
