BIOS 260 HOMEWORK: CDC – Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
For homework this week, you need to go to the website for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and find the answers to the questions below. Part of the purpose of this assignment is to get you used to searching through websites to find the information you are looking for. You will have to do a little digging to find the info below, but it is all there.

1. How many people died in fires in the most recent year for which the CDC has statistics? What is the leading cause of fire-related deaths? What is the major cause of residential fires? a) 2,640 people died in a fire related death, not including firefighters. Smoking is the leading cause of fire-related deaths. Cooking is the Primary cause of residential fires.

2. How many people are bitten by dogs each year? How many people die from dog bites each year? What is the most common age for people to get dog bites? a. 4.5 million People are bitten by dogs every year. 10 to 20 people die each year from dog bites. Ages 5 to 9 year olds are the most common ages people get bit.

3. Of all the people who died by poisoning in the US in the last reported year, what percent of poisonings were intentional, and what percent were accidental? b. 83.8 percent of poisonings are unintentional. 16.2% are intentional. 4. Can getting too hot make you sick? Who is at the highest risk of becoming ill from being too hot? c. Yes getting too hot can make you sick, the elderly are at the greatest risk.

5. According to the CDC, how many infants per 1,000 are born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and what are the symptoms? d. .2 to 1.5 cases of FAS occur every 1000 births. Symptoms include, Distinctive facial features, Deformities of joints limbs and finger, Slow growth, vision and hearing difficulties and a small head.

6. How many children aged 14 and under are killed per day in automobile accidents? How many people died in alcohol-related motor vehicle accidents in the most recent year? e. 17% of the 1210 vehicular deaths are children ages 0-14. 10,228 people were killed in drunken driving accidents.

7. About how many suicides occurred in the US in the most recent statistical year? How many suicides occurred per day? What is the most common method of committing suicide? f. 38,364 deaths by suicide, on average 105 deaths happened each day. Firearms are most commonly used for suicides.

8. About what percentage of Americans have chronic insomnia? How much sleep do people need? Does the need for sleep increase or decrease as you get older? g. 10% of Americans have Chronic Insomnia. People need 8 hours of sleep. The need for sleep increases as you get older.

9. According to the CDC, how many deaths were attributed to excessive alcohol consumption in the most recent time period on which they have statistics? h. 80,00 deaths were related to excessive alcohol use.

10. How many children died from child abuse in the most recent statistical year? What was the age range of children who died from child maltreatment in the US? i. 2,000 children in the U.S die of neglect and child abuse.
