La Curandera
"I bless you in the name of all that is good and strong and beautiful Antonio. Always have the strength to live. Love life, and if despair enter your heart, look for me in the evenings when the wind is gentle and the owls sing in the hills. I shall be with you-,"Ultima told Antonio in the book Bless Me, Ultima bu Rudolfo A. Anaya.
In thbook, a boy named Antonio Experiences a lot of deaths and encounters confusion about his religion. He has a mysterious grandmother, Ultima, that's a curandera but the town's people mistake her by a witch. After the death of Tenorio's daughter town's barer's daughter, he tries to get revenge and threatens to bring death on Ultima throughout the book.
Ultima was put to the test to determine if she was a witch by walking through a door with a cross on top. As she walks through her owl flies down and pokes Tenorio's eye. This is not only my favorite part of the book but is still questionable. It distracts the audience as well as the antagonist into thinking Ultima isn't a witch by focusing on a smaller event instead of her.
"The consequences of life can be overcome by the magical strength the lies in the human heart," is the theme to Antion in Bless Me, Ultima as well as for the audience. Antonio realizes near the end of the book of what Ultima has been trying to teach him. Someone can experience bad things such as Antonio did by witnessing friends die, but they can bloom and make it better with the magical strength that is found in the heart. Bless Me, Ultima is an amazing book to read! It gives you a different view on how a young boy encounters obstacles in his life. I rate this book a 5 because of its intense events and the wonderful details of the

In Bless Me, Ultima, the narrator is a young boy named Antonio who lives in a Spanish-speaking community. Anaya also incorporates many Spanish words such as “llano” to set the tone. Furthermore, instead of stating facts like Lee chooses to do, Anaya’s style goes from idea to idea, blending together with seemingly no plan of where it is going. The entire novel consists of Antonio’s river of thoughts, including his dreams and flashbacks. Along the way, Anaya adds many seemingly extraneous details, but later they will come into play. Anaya’s style also includes many flashbacks that will foreshadow events that are to come later. In Antonio’s early flashback, Anaya’s writing style is clearly shown when he flashes back to when he was…

He thought that the river was going to be forever stained with Lupitos blood. He did not know if Lupito was going to go to heaven or hell. The boy also witnesses the death of the innocent Narsico. After the deaths he begin to wonder why God was not a forgiving god. He knows the Virgin Guandalupe would forgive Narciso but he did not know if God will. The virgin is the personification of the virtue of faith, devotion, and forgiveness. He questioned why Narsico even had to die and he was so innocent. He also starts to wonder about sin and death. It is all so confusing to him and difficult to understand. Ultimas healing powers helps Antonio not just physically but emotionally. Antonio ran home crying when he seen the death of Lupito and as he ran he heard the owls cry, which right after he hears it loses his fear. In Native American culture the owl is seen as a protector, summoning spirit, or as a reincarnation of the virtuous. The owl sends out warning calls that means that danger is near. It also protects Ultima from Tenorio by blinding him in one eye. Antonio did not understand the meaning of the owl and why it was always around until chapter twenty two when he realizes that the owl is Ultima’s soul. “It is the owl that sends out the spirit of the old witch,” says Tenorio. (256) Tenorio kills the owl Ultima also dies. Samuel introduces Antonio to the legend of the Golden Carp. Antonio begins to wonder if the Golden Carp is his god and if he should believe in it instead of the catechism that his mother believes in. The Golden Carp is a symbol of folklore because it is a fish and fish symbolizes the goodness of Earth and nature. It also symbolizes Christian belief because it is symbolic for the great flood from the Old Testament. This is also a biblical allusion. This is one way that the Christian allusions and…

The need for good is represented by the owl, which symbolizes Ultima. The symbolic value of the owl is seen early in the story when Tony calls it "Ultima's owl" (12). Tony is aware of the presence of the owl because he "heard the owl cry its warning" before the death of Lupito (14). This foreshadowing of events occurs throughout the book, and shows the magical powers Tony believed to belong to the owl and Ultima. Because of these powers Tony's life is very confusing and unstable. The owl also proves to be a savior to Antonio's family when it "pounced on the coyotes," while Ultima and Tony are helping Uncle Lucas (92). Tony realizes that in order to be successful, he must heed the warnings that come to him through nature, and his dreams. He learns that he must put himself in vulnerable positions, like the owl who risks it's life, to help others.…

By showing the struggles of Antonio’s day to day life Anaya gave the readers the experience of battling between the dreams of the adults and the children. This was mostly illustrated in the tussle that Antonio faced because of the pre-made future plans of his parents. His mother dreamed of him being a priest or a farmer like the Lunas, while his father dreamed of a life on the road with his kids. Parents tend to do this, conversely causing a battle in the head of their child; sometimes children must choose their own path.…

Ultima's owl is a mysterious character that is talked about throughout Bless Me, Ultima. Often it is referred to by the antagonist Tenorio as a brujas tool. However it is a symbol of Ultima and her kindness, which is interesting since the owl is a symbol of witchcraft in Native American culture. This is probably where Tenorio founded his accusations. The owl is her “bond to the time and harmony of the universe” because here mentor, who was a wise and kind man, told here it was. The owl is a gateway of sorts for Ultima to connect to the spirit world. If the owl dies, so does Ultima.…
