Kurt Vonnegut (1996), in his essay “How to write with Style” advised writers to choose a subject that interest them. I chose the essay “Effective Driving” by Olenewa (2008) because I share with this writer the fascination of perfect driving. In this essay, Olenewa mentioned the criteria by which a person can be considered as a professional driver. The author way of writing was very simple to the reader, especially to me, since English is not my native language. He didn’t use difficult words, keeping me using the dictionary to translate them, which would distract my attention and my enthusiasm to continue reading the essay. I learned from this essay how the organization of the writing should be. I liked using the sense of humor while writing to grab the attention of the reader, as when the author said “Then forgetting I was supposed to be the driver of the car, I tried to squeeze myself into the passenger seat” (50).
In conclusion, the author believed that practicing is a key factor to make the driver control his/her car. Also, paying the attention to the environment is very critical and must be taken in consideration while driving. Olenewa not only defined the effective driver, he also motivated the reader to follow his steps in his writing style. Real-life examples are one the exciting and effective ways a writer can use to attract the attention of the reader. Olenewa used that in a professional way. There is no doubt that this essay is like a footprint that would be the foundation for my upcoming writing
