The movie Kundun shows the struggle of the citizens of Tibet face when China tries to conqueror and control their beloved home. To start off I am going to give a general summary of the movie. The main character and primary focus of the movie is the Dalai Lama. It shows him being found as a young boy and his growing up and learning the ways of the Dalai Lama. He eventually takes over as ruler of the country. China had been trying to overtake Tibet, and claims that Tibet it part of China; it is not its own country. The Chinese try to control the Tibetans, and eventually the Dalai Lama is no longer safe and is forced to escape to India for his own safety.
The primary focus of Kundun is the Dalai Lama. The movie is focused around him. As mentioned before, the movie begins with the search for the Dalai Lama; which is a young boy. To entirely understand why the members of the monastery were looking for The Dalai Lama it is important to understand the history. When I was talking with Dr. Gitomer I learned that the people of Tibet believe in Karma. He stated, “Whatever karma a person dies with, they will be reborn into a family with parents who have the same level of karma” . This does not mean that they will always be reborn as a human; they could come back as an animal as well. A person dies and is remade two weeks later. When a person has reached complete and total liberation and achieved everything that is necessary, like the Dalai Lama, they can choose when to be reborn. They do not need to make a hasty decision. The people have figured out that the new Dalai Lama is created roughly a month after he dies, and then he is reborn nine months later. Once the Dalai Lama has reached the age range between 4 and 6 an oracle is brought in to figure out where he is located. The oracle has a vision and they use the clues to find the new Dalai Lama.
