Along with the role of the pharmacy technician changing, the role of the pharmacist is taking a turn towards better patient care. In some pharmacies the pharmacist does all the dispensing and there are no technicians involved, but with the automated dispensing system performing these duties, pharmacists will be inclined to spend more time with patients to discuss their medications with them and to monitor their drug therapy in order to provide optimal pharmaceutical care. By spending more time with patients and getting…

Computerized orders allow the opportunity for providers to send prescriptions to a nurse more quickly and efficiently versus other methods. The electronic medical system allows nurses to retrieve essential information about medications that they may need regarding certain medications to ensure that there are no contradictions with allergies, diagnosis, or anything that may lead to a medication error (Athanasakis, 2012, p. 778). One system that improves medication safety is automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs) by reducing medication administration errors (Oldland, et al., 2015). A pharmacy technician checks all of the medications ensuring that the medications are in the right location along with the right dose which aids nurses while administrating medication (Oldland, et al.,…

A pharmacist is the healthcare provider that has a duty to dispense prescription drugs to the patient. They provide information about those drugs and help patients understand the instructions their doctors or other health practitioners provided (McKay, 2010). The pharmacist also gives information to the patient about possible side effects of the drugs and warnings of interactions with other drugs. Most pharmacists work in a retail setting in stores such as CVS, Walgreens or Wal-Mart, while others work in a hospital setting. Pharmacists are responsible for the accuracy of every prescription that is filled, but in some cases rely upon pharmacy technicians to assist with the dispensing of medications with the pharmacists supervision. The expertise of a pharmacist is also used by pharmaceutical manufacturers in the research and development of new drugs and testing of possible side effects. Pharmacists can also work for insurance companies providing their knowledge to help develop benefit packages and cost analysis on specific drugs. As with any other profession, pharmacists can also work as full time professors at medical colleges and universities teaching and providing input…

In a Pharmacy profession there are eight ethical codes of which five I will discuss; the first is to respect the relationship boundaries between a patient and a pharmacist (US Pharm D). There may arise cases where one wants to be objective and voice an opinion that doesn’t suit the role of a pharmacist, always remember that it’s a professional relationship regardless of how close one is to the patients outside of work; being unbiased makes it easier to rationally provide an answer. In regard to this code, a pharmacist’s main goal is to maintain the trust of the patient which goes both ways; trust that the patient has listened and understood the use of the medication and will continuously use it the right manner, and in turn the patient trusts that you have provided to the best of your knowledge the most suitable medication. The theory that best fits the image portrayed by this code is Kant’s theory, “to always treat others as an end to themselves and never merely as means”, this means that a pharmacist isn’t promoting a specific drug and completely neglecting his patience health and terminating patients overall trust. The pharmacist should in no way lie to the patient while giving treatment even if their intention was for good. According to Kant’s theory good results never make an action morally…

Pharmacists offer various intermediary and vital services in medicine. Throughout the twentieth century and into the twenty-first, their scope of practice, duties and responsibilities have shifted dramatically, as have the situations in which pharmacists practice (Pharmacists Defence Association, 2008, p. 2). The laws pertaining to these shifting roles and increased responsibilities have failed to emerge in due time (Appelbe, 2002; Appelbe, 2009). Accordingly, they lag behind reality. For example, pharmacists provide care in case of emergencies but also suffer from lack of legal protection from malpractice in such situations, face ethical challenges relative to dispensing some forms of pharmaceuticals and providing consultations for patients (PDA, 2008, p. 2, 3).…
