Kristi Brown's Argument Against Abortion
The subject of abortion is a very touchy matter in today’s society. Numerous people who feel abortion is a morally wrong thing to do, call themselves pro-life. Those who believe a woman can make the choice whether or not to have an abortion are pro-choice. It’s up to every individual to have an opinion on the topic in regards to what they feel is right. However, is it appropriate to force one’s beliefs on another person? Wouldn’t that be a breach of our first amendment, the separation between church and state?
Pro-life groups tend to have only a few arguments, which sounds like it's an opinion rather than fact. One of which argument is that abortion is murder. However, what about separation of church and state? If abortion was illegal mainly because of religious groups, wouldn’t that be a breach of our first amendment? Pro-life groups feel that fetuses are humans; therefore, the act of abortion is wrong to do. While fetuses have the potential of human life, they are fetuses or embryos. They cannot survive on their own or have any human functions until later in pregnancy when they are usually not aborted. Although, stating that abortion is murder seems like more of an opinion than a fact. Actually, “a fetus is not legally or scientifically a person or human being so abortion cannot be equated to murder or taking a life since the fetus is not a person nor alive” ("Why Abortion Should Be Legal"). The only way a fetus is surviving is because it’s relying on a mother for nutrients, much like a parasite would.
