Kratom Case Study
Keeping food on the plate and out of Landfills:
Issue: The central issue that is being discussed is that food is being thrown away when it hasn’t gone bad yet. The issue also involves finding different solutions to the issue that can bring awareness to how much money and food is being wasted.
2 Positions:
Dana Gunder: The only way for food to be conserved when it’s still fresh is by informing the people who have the biggest impact on the issue. Those would be the consumers and the distributors in companies who should be given tips to stop the issue.
Emily Broad Leib: The laws that cause food to be thrown away when it’s still healthy for the consumer, should be eliminated or be adjusted so it can still be sold in stores, and restaurants.
Is Kratom the Plant that Heals or Kills?
Issue: The issue being discussed in this debate is whether or not Kratom should be considered a schedule 1 drug, or only be used as a medicine.
2 Positions:
Karita Babu/Edward Boyer: They both believe that the Drug Enforcement Administration decision to not make Kratom a Schedule 1 drug is correct, although it shouldn’t be sold to everyone.
David Galbis-Reig: Kratom should be a Schedule 1 drug because it fits the criteria of a Schedule 1 drug, and there is no current studies of medical uses that could be beneficial to America.

It was very surprising to me reading this debate because of the issues concerning if people take the drug. David Galbis said that in Thailand Kratom is the number one drug abuse and approximately 60% individuals have a disorder, and admit “to abusing or being addicted to it”. This was interesting because it’s being considered being a medicine in the U.S. when it's causing problems in Thailand. His position was that it should be a Schedule 1 drug because it fits the label description that the Drug Enforcement Administration

Pre-made meals, or frozen meals are not only bad for one’s health, but they are bad for the environment. They add to the amount of waste that the food industry produces. The convincing advertisements and convenient packaging hide the harsh reality, “...behind the mouth-watering offerings lies a distasteful reality: billions of dollars' worth of food is dumped each year because of retailers' inefficiency” (The Economist, 2008). Food waste is not only produced from prepackaged foods, but also from restaurants that offer huge portion sizes which people cannot finish. Some people may get their leftovers wrapped, but the rest send their food to the trash. Decreasing portion sizes, buying organic foods locally and cooking meals at home, and buying carefully can help the waste issue in America. On top of that, decreasing waste production would help corporations, such as Walmart, or Stop & Shop, cut…
