From its humble beginnings as a single store in 1962, Kohl’s has quickly become one of the nation’s largest retailers. Based and headquartered in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, Kohl's is a family-focused, value-oriented, specialty department store offering quality exclusive and national brand merchandise to the customer in an environment that is convenient, friendly and exciting. Currently, Kohl's operates stores and distribution centers in 49 states. Every year, we continue to build new stores and remodel existing locations to create an inspiring shopping experience. We began in 1962 as one department store with a vision. Today, you can find our stores in neighborhoods across the United States. Every year, we continue to build new stores and remodel existing locations, working to reach all our customers nationwide. Plus, you can now shop Kohl's online, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for all the brand names and great values you've come to expect from Kohl's. From the stores, to Kohls.com, to our corporate office and distribution centers, we're all working to serve you better. (Kohl’s Corporation, 2013, Press Room) Our corporate office is home to a team of more than 3,500 people who provide a wide range of services to support the total corporation, including our more than 1,000 stores nationwide. Kohl's distribution centers are automated, flow-through centers serving our stores and fulfilling our e-commerce orders. Located in Menomonee Falls, Wis.; Winchester, Va.; Findlay, Ohio; Blue Springs, Mo.; Corsicana, TX; Mamakating, N.Y.; San Bernardino, Calif.; Monroe, Ohio; Macon, Ga.; Patterson, Calif. and Ottawa, Ill... (Kohl’s Corporation, 2013, Press Room) It all began in 1962 Kohl's opens its doors with its first store located in Brookfield, Wisconsin. 1978 The Kohl's Corp. becomes wholly owned by the BATUS Retail Group, a subsidiary of British-American Tobacco Company. While owned by BATUS, Kohl's expands from 10 to 39 stores throughout Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana. In, 1986 Kohl's is purchased by a group of investors led by Kohl's senior management and the company opened its 40th store. In, 1988 Kohl's acquires 26 Main Street Stores, expanding to 66 stores. In addition, in 1992 Kohl's offers 11.1 million shares of the company's stock to the public in one of the largest initial public stock offerings ever made by a Wisconsin company. (Kohl’s Corporation, 2013, Press Room) Through 1993-1996 Kohl's continues its expansion and added 51 stores. Kohl’s stock splits two for one in April 1996. And in 1997 Kohl's enters Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, expanding with 32 new stores. 1998 Kohl's joins the S&P 500. The company's expansion continues with 32 additional stores, including locations in Winston-Salem/Greensboro, Richmond and Knoxville. Kohl's stock splits two for one in April. 1999 Kohl's Corp. reports its fourth consecutive year of earnings growth over 30%. The company unveils new stores in the St. Louis, Dallas/Fort Worth and Denver markets. Kohl's expands its corporate headquarters facility in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin.
