Despite a very successful rookie year, it was overshadowed by exceptional years by Carmelo Anthony and LaBron James. Wade would finish third in votes for rookie of the year, behind Anthony and James. Despite a 5-15 start, the Miami Heat would go on to finish 42-40 and make the playoffs. In game one of their first series, which was against the New Orleans Hornets, Wade hit the game-winning shot. The Heat would go on to win the series 4-3. In the second round of the playoffs, the Heat faced top seeded Indiana and after a close series they would go on to lose it 4-2. Wade became the fourth rookie in the history of the NBA to lead his team in the playoffs with scoring (18.0 ppg) and assists(5.6…

Magic Johnson faced many tough competitors like Larry Bird. Johnson and Larry Bird were first linked as rivals after Johnson's Michigan State squad defeated Bird's Indiana State team in the 1979 NCAA finals. The rivalry continued in the NBA, and reached its climax when Boston and Los Angeles met in three out of four NBA Finals from 1984 to 1987. Several journalists hypothesized that the Johnson–Bird rivalry was so appealing because it represented many other contrasts, such as the clash between the Lakers and Celtics and the blacks and whites. With this rivalry between Johnson and Bird it…

A Poem for “Magic”, written by Quincy Troupe is a truly dazzling poem. I’m not usually one who can easily relate to a poem but this one elicits so much passion for the game of basketball that it resonates in my head. The way that the game is described in the poem makes me think back to the mindset I had when I was just a little kid playing dunk ball on my 6 foot hoop in the driveway. I could do whatever I wanted on that hoop and it made the game feel magical being able to fly above the rim just how I imagine Magic Johnson feels when he’s playing on a regular 10 foot hoop.…

Cuban's whatever-it-takes attitude and commitment to winning has everyone's attention. From his first introduction to the team to the end of his first season as owner, the players responded with a 31-19 record, including a 9-1 mark in April 2000. In addition to hiring special coaches for offense, defense and shooting, Cuban has promised to do everything in his power to improve the team. This goal was achieved as the club finished the 2000-01 season with a 53-29 record en route to their first playoff appearance in 11 years where they became just the sixth team in NBA history to be down 0-2 and come back to win a…
