Adults were characterized by the fusion between maxillae and cranium bones. Another method of study was the used of external morphology. 18 external morphometrics were taken from 17 bottlenose dolphins from coastal Victoria. Beach-casted dolphins were previously measured in 2002-2009. Some animals were excluded due to incomplete data, such as bloating due to decomposition, or if the specimen was still a juvenile. A third method of study was mitochondrial DNA sampling. Skin samples of dead beach-casted dolphins were taken from coastal Victoria and placed in a mixture of substances to create a saline solution. When skin samples were unavailable, tooth samples were taken from museum specimens. Tooth samples were stored in sterilized Falcon tubes, and decontaminated by a solution of sodium hypochloride. Sections were…

For many years, people have gone to places like SeaWorld in either Orlando, California, or Texas to marvel at and to be entertained by the creatures known as Orcinus orca. For those people not familiar with the scientific term, they are also called Orca whales. These powerful, magnificent, intelligent creatures have become the trademarks of the parks where they entertain, and they have also made a lasting impression on the children and adults who come to see any of their shows. “More than 13 million people flock to the company’s three parks in Orlando, San Diego, and San Antonio to see Shamu every year (Vary, linccweb.org)”. But while it is true that people greatly enjoy these shows, there is a growing controversy regarding the argument about whether these animals should be caged or free. This paper is going to explore both sides of this argument, while…

I went to the Art Museum of South Texas to take a look at the artwork they had on display there. I found that they had an exhibit called Liquid Light and it included black and white photographs of the sea and its inhabitants. In this exhibit there were works from 10 different photographers and while I loved and developed an appreciation for many of the photographs on display the one that caught my eye was the “Diving Humpback whale” by Wayne Levin (born 1945). This paper will focus on why Wayne Levin takes photographs of the underwater world and why the “Diving Humpback Whale” photograph was my favorite.…

Going back to Costa Rica was dangerous to Stewart, Watson and Sea Shepherd, but with meticulous planning they achieved it. To not get caught, they took public transportation. When they returned to the city, they found out that the citizens were rallying to stop killing sharks. Due to this, it made it easier for Stewart and the others to film and gather more information. In the end, they did process the film and the movement of stopping shark finning have just started. Right now, shark finning have been banned to 16 countries. Shark-fin soup is even banned in Toronto. After watching this documentary, I now have changed my opinion about sharks and I hope the same for everyone else around the world. In addition, without sharks, we could lose more oxygen that is produced by all the trees and jungles in the world combined because without the top predator, the balance in marine life would be gone. Hence, we need them more as they need us. We should stop killing them and save them to save…

I have a deep interest in the ocean and marine life, which was fostered when my family and I moved to the Pacific Coast. This interest grew further after I went on a backstage tour to the aquarium at the Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo. Due to this continuous exposure to the ocean and the creatures that live there, I am focusing my education around my interest in marine life. It's for this reason that I’m majoring in Marine Biology with a minor in Chemistry. With this education, my goal is to become an Aquarist, and build my way up to becoming an ocean or aquarium diver. As a diver, I want to have the opportunity to study coral reefs, and create and implement conservation plans. In addition, I want to study sea turtles and ways to conserve their declining…

For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by marine life. I visited the Baltimore Aquarium many times as a child; I remember being amazed by the different kinds of animals I saw. I spent my summers at the library reading about marine organisms, their habitats, their adaptations, and how they interacted with other organisms. In middle school, I participated in a project that consisted of decorating the classroom to represent a biome, and I worked on the marine biome. In the summer before 10th grade, I visited Sea World and was exposed to an even larger variety of marine organisms than I had been before. That fall, in English class we had to write a paper on our career goals; I decided I would like to be a marine biologist. During my senior year of high school I applied to Millersville University to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Biology, with a concentration in marine biology. Through my undergraduate studies, my interest in biological oceanography developed.…

The International Whaling Commission (IWC) is a worldwide organisation accountable for regulations on whaling. Under the guidance of this organisation, its member countries meet annually on a regular basis and discuss issues regarding whaling (IWC 2011). After long-term discussions, Japan’s whaling practices have been restricted, and Japan is currently only allowed to perform whaling in the name of research in the northwestern Pacific and the Antarctic. (Morikawa 2009:5). Since this commercial whaling moratorium, Japan strives for the ‘’resumption of whaling based on research and scientific surveys’’ (ibid., p.3). A couple of significant facts suggest that Japan’s stated argument is a smokescreen to hide income–based motives. This essay will question Japan’s pro-whaling argument, the right to conduct whaling as a historical and traditional practice, and argue whether it is well founded to justify the practice of commercial whaling. The Japanese pro-whaling policies debatable nature will be presented from three main aspects – cultural, environmental and monetary.…
