Kirtland Cutter is a name that you have probably never heard of, but it is actually a very important name. If you ever wondered how the Davenport is how it is or who had the idea of all the mansions in Spokane? Well you can thank Kirk Cutter. Kirtland Cutter was born on August 20, 1860 in Cleveland, OH. He lived in Whirlpool, OH on a farm with his mother and grandparents. His grandpa was a big influence in his work. His grandfather loved nature, and living on a farm really influenced him. Cutter went to Brooks Military Academy. Cutter only wanted to go because of the building. After the Military Academy his grandfather enrolled him to Arts Students’ League of New York to become an illustrator. Going to the art school have him the opportunity to go to Europe. Going to Europe really influenced his work in the later years. You are probably wondering how Cutter got to Spokane. His Uncle ( Horace. Cutter). Gave him encouragement to come to Spokane. Once Kirk moved to spokane he quit being an illustrator and pursed being an architect. Kirtland’s uncle owned a
Cutter and partner John C. Perez basically rebuilt the whole entire city. The two of them designed some of the biggest and most famous buildings in Spokane. Such as the Steam Plant and the Davenport. After building the Davenport business really started to pick up. Cutter was the architect for many mansions on Brownes Addition, such as the Campbell’s Family, John A. Finch, Patrick Clark, Wakefield, Henry Richards and Richards Rutter. Then Cutter went to the South Hill designing Louis Davenports mansion, F. Lewis Clark and Jay P. Graves Mansion’s. Cutter then later went to Seattle designing even more buildings such as the Rainer Club, Seattle Golf & Country Club and Stimson Green Mansion.
