Kinetic Expressions: A Dance Analysis
Kinetic Expressions (Kinetics) has been taking place at Berea College for 20 years. This year the team celebrated its 20th by revisiting a choreography that was performed at the first Kinetics and were very purposeful of who they allowed to choreograph in this production. This will be a critique of some of the dances performed; it will go into detail about each dance, analyze the movements and reveal the message. The opening act to Kinetics this year was the choreography that was performed at the very first Kinetic Expressions. It is called “Birdland: Revisited” and it was choreographed by Dr. Roy Scudder-Davis. This jazz filled choreography was a great pop of color its costumes black paired with either a neon yellow or pink accent. In the …show more content…
The opening scene was the sound of the piano and deep blue lighting that became more illuminated as the head lights were turned up; the beginning for this piece consisted of various partners paused in one shape that they used the beginning instrumentals to move out of and into another shape facing stage left into the distance. In order to keep the focus on those that had random solos and duets, the choreographer, Taylor Caldwell, used stillness and the wings to her advantage. The lighting throughout the entire piece was one of a somber mood; no bright lighting, like a yellow or orange, was used in this piece. The music added to this mood of somewhat desperation by the lyrics in the piece “Let it all go, let it all out now”; although, there were lyrics that mentioned things of strength and I believe that there were movements used to show the feeling of letting all of these things …show more content…
The only way to describe this performance is superb. Avery nice tough to the dance movement was the fact that she did not have music with words being sung. By only having the instrumentals, you were almost forced to pay more attention to her and the way her body was moving. She used the various level and paired them accordingly with the correct movement; this helped to tell the story. There was a moment when she was on relevé and posed. In my head these two concepts juxtaposed one another, because typically when you are on a higher level, in relevé, your weight is light and you movement is tall almost as if you are trying to be an extension of the sky but Sarah did not do this. In that moment, it looked like she was an extension from the floor; strong in her roots, heavy in weight and extending up to the sky via the ground. Her cooperation, and or relationship, with the long cloth she was using was mesmerizing. She controlled it well and moved as one as opposed to moving as two separate beings. The way she executed every movement was very technical and movement filled her entire body and space. Sarah performed with a lot of energy; you could feel the energy she had with herself but as soon as she looked into the audience you thought she was looking at you and that, in my opinion, is how you grasp an audience. There were many other great, good and not so good things that happened at this Kinetics performance.

I was very impressed with the acrobatics and choreography which showed great dedication on the company’s part. With my experience in Avenue Q, I know how much time and work it takes to even learn and perfect a simple dance, so I would really like to appreciate and recognize the dedication and hard work of the actors and choreography of the company. I think those elements must have been a big part of the director’s vision and that the director must…

The first performance of the show was entitled “One Dance” and performed by both Junior and Senior Company, which was something I have not seen before. In sync with the bollywood music --which changed from classical to romantic and hip hop songs-- the lighting was set to transition from orange to magenta and finally pink. Something that impressed me is how they used a part of their costume as…

What i first noticed when I first entered the performance center was a duet dancing slowly. The girls’ costume was a purple color and she was wearing a tank top and a flowy skirt. The male dancer was wearing simple purple pants that were obviously moveable. I particularly noticed the lighting that was on the floor. On the floor seemed to be a projection of snowflakes and cool blue lighting on top.…

Each dancer wore black sleeve shirts with black spandex shorts. There was a center spot light on the dancers. The dancers were all in unison and there was music responsiveness. The dancers also used gestural movements and sometimes they were asymmetrical and symmetrical from each other. I think that the choreographer did not have a meaning for this piece. Contextualization include the observation that this piece was choreographed in a modern genre with pure movement. I think that the performers did a good job with their performance because they were all together and did a great job. I would tell anyone of any age to go watch this…

For instance, in the scene where Cheech goes to the Lazy River, the lighting effects made the audience feel as if they were looking into the murky water. The cool colors of blue and gray gave the scene a dark and eerie mood. Lighting was also effective during the night club scenes in that it provided a feeling of temptation and lust. I think that it is important to note that the backdrop for this musical was very simple; therefore, the lighting is what made each scene realistic. In response to costumes, they were very 1929 New York like with some modern style.…

We decided to delve deeper into the realm of physical theatre for our devised creative adaptation. The main reason for this was our success in unit 2 were we used Frantic Assembly, an innovative physical theatre group, as a Practitioner. We now want to work on the basics that we learned last year but also extend our skills to more challenging and advanced physical movements and sequences. Now that the shackles are off we are interested to look into other physical theatre practitioners such as ‘PUSH’ who use a much more a Dance weighted style of physical theatre which is evident from watching their promos of ‘tight pants’ and ‘kung-fu’ on their website. Another group that we looked at are ‘Volcano Theatre Company.’ This is because Frantic claim that ‘Volcano were a massive influence’ for them. This is evident when watching ‘volcano’ show like ‘LOVE’ and ‘Romeo and Juliet.’…

Explanation: This is a clear and specific thesis statement because it focuses on talking about one dance, which is Kurt Jooss’ “The Green Table” and analyzing one theme, which is antiwar. To support the thesis, I would illustrate what the “expressionistic modern dance” is and what the characteristics of expressionism are. Then, I would demonstrate how these characteristics can be found in this dance through analyzing how dancers’ movements (including specific movements and movement sequence), gestures, and…

In attending Entrances and Exit presented by Grossmont colleges dance program, I found there to be many interesting routines. All of the performances were well put together, although there were a few times when I was just like “What?” Every performance I found to be dreadful was always followed by a performance that would grasp my attention again. There were a couple pieces that I found extremely magnificent like “My name is Sam” choreographed by Nancy Boskin-Mullen, “Toy Makers Can-Can” choreographed by Colleen Shipkowski, and “In the wild” choreographed by Melissa Aldo. Though, there were many entertaining performances, these three stood out to me the most because with all of them I found myself very engaged in the dance.…

While the study of composition develops students’ knowledge and skills in the manipulation of the elements of dance, generating and organising movement into structures, dance analysis promotes critical thinking. In describing, interpreting and evaluating a variety of dance works, students gain a wider exposure to dance that can contribute to their own creative dance experiences. It promotes a larger movement vocabulary for students to explore and develop and will also…

When Jess and Claire did their own take on a classical dance from Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire, it made me feel very happy for them. It is heartwarming for me to watch people “slow” dance and look into each other’s eyes as intensely as both of them did. Also a quote that was brought up was the Ginger could do everything Fred did but “She just did it backwards and in high heels”. Early in the performance we saw Jess use crutches with Claire, and she was showing him and she would move around in them, and she happened to be able to go backwards with them where Jess said he had some difficulty with…

The dance performance that I watched was by the San Diego Dance Theater, Library Dances. The dance was taken place at the Chula Vista Civic Center Library. There were 3 different dances during the event. The two dances that were choreographed by Jean Isaacs were “Two Forms” and “Water Lilies”. She is also the founder of San Diego Dance Theater. The other dance “Blot” was from a young choreographer’s showcase named Gina Bolles-Soresnsen. The dance occurred at a library, which was very intriguing and exciting. Libraries tend to not have a lot of art displayed. It was a first and definitely a good change to see dances being performed at a library. There was a very huge crowd watching the dances. I was very surprised and thrilled to see how many people still appreciate art in the form of dance. I saw all different kinds of people, children, old people younger people who watched the performances. It gave me hope that art is not dead and is still alive and thriving amongst all crowds. The audience including me was very welcomed by Jean Isaacs herself. She gave us a brief summary of her experience, her company and her dancers. It gave me a good idea what to expect and learn from the dance performance I was about to watch. I greatly admired the dancers’ bodies that moved freely and openly to the audience. It felt as if they were trying to send a message across. I was very surprised how different it is watching a dance on YouTube and watching it live. I can feel the dancers’ emotions and feelings through live dance that I cannot achieve watching online or on video. All three dances were very unique and had its own meaning and feeling to it. As each dance was performed, I saw myself changing emotions from one dance to another. The change of moods, gave a very great and energizing performance. Overall, I was very intrigued and amazed with the dance performances that day. It was not easy to depict their meaning but surely I did enjoy their dance a lot. It left…

In between sets, the performers would speak about jazz history and how the purpose of jazz back in the day was to get everybody dancing and happy, and in being told that, it allowed me to listen closer to the music and try to feel what that was like. Looking around the room during the performance, I would see a number of people nodding their heads or tapping their feet along to the music. Even people who didn’t initially seem interested in the performance upon arriving looked genuinely interested in the performance because the music sounded so inviting. It made me curious to see what it would be like to watch a jazz band perform in a real venue where you can get up and actually dance. I would really consider attending another performance in the future just to feel that same intense atmosphere that was created that…

Creativity is inspiration. Recognized international choreographer through history have been inspired by books, paintings, thoughts, objects or issues. For example, in all improvisation exercises people need an inspiration. Therefore a point to support their movement and the quality of dance. In my experience, inspiration has been my first tool to draw forth my personal body movement. I have created numerous choreographies based on real histories about themes that the spectator can identify with. “Challenge,” my last production, interpreted by young dancers, was about how black and white colors divide two…
