Keystone Species Essay
Castor canadensis, otherwise known as the North American Beaver, is a keystone species on the verge of extinction. It lives in the northern regions of North America, specifically in Canada and the United States. Its status on the IUCN red list is endangered. This species is very beneficial, but is racing extinction due to people not seeing the importance it does to both humans and the ecosystem alike.
The benefits of these beavers are that they prevent water floods and regulate water flow which fulfills their keystone niche and is also a human benefit. in current times due to conservation acts, it is estimated to be 10-15 million beavers, as said by Wild explorer. Treats that cause the beaver to decline in numbers are people building on beaver territory, trapping for fur and the demand for it, as told by the Oregon Zoo.
Many actions have been taken to preserve beaver populations in the wild. Many acts including the Endangered Species Act help with its preservation. another solution made was the Canadian Wildlife Act the made it illegal and protected from all sorts of harm to the beaver and many other endangered organisms, as told by the Canadian ministry of environment. Potential solutions are breeding and reintroducing beavers to its natural habitats.
