Kentucky Bluegrass
Kentucky bluegrass is a versatile cool season perennial grass that adapts to a wide range of soil pH, soil texture, and microclimate within temperate climate zone. The ideal growing conditions are well-drained fertile soil with medium texture, and humid temperate regions. Kentucky bluegrass can tolerate soil pH from 5.4 to 7.3, however, studies carried in Central Oregon indicated optimal performance when soil pH is between 6.2 -6.8 (Butler 2002). Kentucky bluegrass has low tolerance for saline soil and drought, but will tolerate flooding and low winter temperature (Barnes 2003).
Management practice for Kentucky bluegrass varies across different areas of production. In Eastern Oregon there are three main areas of production, central Oregon,

In the Grande Ronde Valley seeds are planted in late April to late May. In the Columbia Basin and Central Oregon seeds are planted in August to September. All seeds are harvested one calendar year after planting (2011). The harvesting Method is similar to the method used for other grass seed. This includes “swathing the crop into windrow and allowing it to dry a few days before threshing (Copeland, 2001). According to Affeldt R.P et al, Kentucky bluegrass seed yield for eastern Oregon is between 800 to 1,600lb/acre of clean seeds. The profitability of Kentucky bluegrass seed production is analyzed in the Enterprise budge created by Oregon State University extension services for central Oregon. The Enterprise budget includes total, fix, variable cost, income, return on cost per acre, and a detail breakdown of machineries use per hour. This budget helps growers to understand the cost associated to the production of Kentucky …show more content…
The most common diseases affecting Kentucky bluegrass are powdery mildew, Erysiphe graminis, stripe rust, puccinia striiformis, and ergot, Claviceps purpurea. Powdery mildew is favored by humid cool weather, shaded area, and poor air circulation (http://ipm.ucanr.edu/PMG/r785101511.html). The Stripe rust, appears in late spring and is favored by humid condition with temperature between 70 and 75F, and Ergot affects the flowers of the plant by replacing the seed with sclerotia (Butlers2002). The most common pest in Kentucky bluegrass fields is grain mite, Penthaleus major, Sod webworm, Chrysoteuchia topiaria, thrips, Thripidae, and aphids, Aphididae. Proper insect pest management system is needed to keep insect population at a low

Having an effective healthcare system has been a priority for every government in modern times. Everybody has a significant event, or emergency in their lives that at a minimum requires medical assistance, and sometimes hospitalization. The kind of medical care received can vary widely based on availability, and personal preference. Destitute hospitals are often the result of failed policies, or unstable governments, In the book “Little Princes”, Connor Grennan describes the hospital conditions in Kathmandu, Nepal during a civil war. While some clear similarities exist between the Hospitals in the Western Kentucky, U.S.A., and Kathmandu, Nepal, there are striking differences.…

    Louisiana Bourbons

    • 413 Words
    • 2 Pages

The term Bourbon refers to the white rulers throughout the South at the end of the Reconstruction period. The Bourbons were democrats who ruled Louisiana until well into the 20th century. After 1877 cotton and sugar planters along with wealthy New Orleans businessmen reigned over the state; many of them were sons or grandsons of those that ruled before the Civil War. The Bourbon Democrats of Louisiana quickly realized that they would not be able to completely return to the plantation South of 1860, so they slowly entered into modern times by securing monetary investments from the North and overseas, which brought industrial capitalism to Bourbon Louisiana. When it came to maintaining white supremacy and maintaining a conservative fiscal and tax policy, the Bourbons were firmly planted in their antebellum ways. They believed that even though the institution of slavery was now deemed illegal, they still held their beliefs that blacks should remain subordinate because they were mentally and morally inferior. The Bourbons also believed that "cheap, docile black labor was essential," in the "period before the advent of mechanized agriculture." The Bourbons believed that the Government's main concern should be with the protection of life and private property, thus reducing budgeting for public schools and other institutions. Mayor Jastremski of Baton Rouge, and Henry J. Hearsey the editor-publisher of the New Orleans Daily States, were both "strident reactionaries." They lived in the past and hated the North immensely. Conservative Democrats in Bourbon Louisiana believed that the white voters were "susceptible to racial appeals, and would tolerate all manners of fraud when committed in the name of white solidarity." In 1878, a Kentucky man by the name of Edward A. Burke, became the state treasurer. Burke represented Louisiana's whites when the 1876 presidential election came into dispute. The Compromise of 1877 solved the issue involving the allocation of Louisiana's…

    Salt and Grass Growth

This scientific paper will answer questions on the effects of salt on grass growth. In the winter, many people place a salt compound on their driveways to melt snow and ice that has accumulated. The following spring, it is noticed that the edges of the driveway does not have any grass growing and grass a little further from the driveway is growing slower than the rest of the lawn. It will be determined if grass growth is negatively impacted in the spring after a winter of salt compound applications.…

5An interesting issue which lies outside the scope of this chapter is the question of regional variations in the use of the folk tradition. It may well be that region is as important a variable as race. Delta musicians, black and white, may have had more in common with each other than would musicians in other regions, e.g., Appalachia, the Texas plains, etc.…

Bermudagrass is a warm-season grass, which means it grows best when temperatures are around 75°F to 80°F. However, it can withstand temperatures up to 110°F. It grows best in very sunny areas, so it should not be used in areas that are heavily shaded. It has an excellent resistance to drought as well, although since it is a plant it will definitely benefit if it is watered consistently. Bermudagrass grows thick and short for the most part, the blades…

PH is basically the negative log of hydrogen ion activity used to measure the acidity or basicity. The pH level ranges on a scale from one to fourteen, one being most acidic, fourteen being most basic, and seven being neutral (Soil pH and Fertilizers). A pH level of 6.5 or slightly acidic is ideal to most plants because nutrients are most readily available between a range of six to seven (Soil pH and Fertilizers). If the pH falls below four or above nine, a living organism dies(Water Quality Tests). The pH of a soil is its measure of relative acidity or alkalinity; pH is an acronym for potential hydrogen. The availability of nutrients is directly affected by soil pH. Past studies have shown that pH is a strong indicator of soils that are chemical properties. The hypothesis for our experiment is that all the plant trials will grow, but the filtered water plants will grow most rapidly, as filtered water has fewer contaminants and more nutrients. By completing this experiment, we plan to determine which type of water is ideal for growing the healthiest indoor…

A pest is any organism that reduces the availability, quality or value of a human resource including our crop plants. Flint,M. L and Vanden Bosh, R 1981. Four pests have been researched, although Flint and Van den Bosh describe any detrimental organism as a pest, in this report we will treat pests as those which breathe and move. Under the sub heading Pests I have chosen to look at Greenhouse White Fly and Woolly Aphid. In this report horticultural diseases are those which are less animate and more closely reminiscent of viruses and growths. Under the sub-heading of Diseases I have chosen to research Botrytis and Apple Scab.…

Tall fescue is the most important cool season grass in the United States. Most tall fescue is infected with a fungal endophyte that reduces performance in grazing animals and causes reproductive problems in horses. Sheep appear to be less affected by the endophyte than cattle and horses. Animal performance is superior on endophtye-free fescue, but plant persistence suffers. MaxQ tall fescue contains a non-toxic endophyte, which improves animal performance while maintaining plant performance.…
